So I bought a bayonet online for my recent addition to the family, an Arisaka Type 99, with all the original goodies and numbers but, no bayonet so... well the one I got was in the right price range and looked ok in the pics but when I got it home, it didn't fit! Well a week of research later revealed it is a training bayonet and some used smaller lugs.
So the question is, suppose he knew what he sold me and did I pay too much? (I think a "yes" will work for both of those)
They are significantly more rare but... I paid around $120.00 including shipping.
Anybody know about these?

I'm not exactly sure what a training bayonet goes for? I think you should ask Terri from nambuworld, she's an expert on these items and can probably tell you if these bring a premium.

Typically, $120 for a Japanese Type 38/99 bayonet without scabbard or frog is significantly too much in my opinion.

On e-bay you could pick up a very good condition Type 38/99 bayonet with the scabbard and frog for around $200.

I just bought a nice kokura Type 99 bayo for $150 with scabbard and rubberized canvas frog. About $180 AFTER shupping.

IMHO: "you been had".

Oh ya, it does have the scabbard and leather frog.

it does appear to be a training bayonet - no arsenal marks, dull and as you say - does not fit, the fuller is off too.

my guess? the guy you bought it from found no obvious markings on it, and unloaded it at a bargain price. $120 is quite low for an Arisaka - expect $150++ depending on arsenal and condition.

My thoughts? - you obviously do not want to collect a rare bayonet - you want something cool to go with your rifle, find a guy who does want a trainer and trade him for a nice example.

You didn't get ripped, the seller didn't know - to a collector that will be worth more - find a guy & make a trade.

Sorry guys, can someone point out the differences between a "trainer" and the real McCoy? They're both pointy and made of steel right? This particular one may not have hit the "2nd's smelter" getting returned at QC for incorrect tolerences (its a problem if it won't fit a rifle)...but "trainer"...?

If it came with a scabbard and frog (non-repro) then you actually did well. But $120 would have been too much for a trainer without a scabbard.

In terms of ID'ing a trainer, basically they are generally all un-marked. Real ones have recognized markings from one of the state arsenals stamped into the blade near the hilt. Build quality is no indication since as the war progressed, some pretty sketchy bayonets were issued from imperial arsenals ;)

I once had one (wish I still did) with a square pommel, straight hilt, straight grips of some cheap wood rivetted on, no fuller on the blade, and rough file marks all over it (under the blue). It was, if memory serves, a late-war Jinsen Arsenal type 99 Substitute Standard bayonet, not a trainer. Sure looked rough though.

More pics... I'm pretty sure the frog and scabbard are authentic although not in great shape.
And I actually paid $136 including shipping, in Canadian dollars.
I hope I can recover my money and/or trade it for something that will fit the gun.
