Anyone out there using a back-bored crown on their rifle(s)? If so, do you find it increases felt recoil? Any effect on accuracy?

Anyone know where a person could get it done? Only seen places in the U.S.A. that do it.

Thanks for the help!

It may sound somewhat different to the shooter. Accuracy will not increase over a conventional crown if they are both done correctly. Making a removable 'bloop tube' would give the same results.

I did a post on my attempts with this about two years ago. At about .75 of an inch deep there was a definite percieved decrease in muzzle blast, on a 223 rifle. At .5 of an inch it was debated by several of us who shot it.
There was a problem getting the crown sharp when it was .75-1 inch deep, it took patience to cut it crispy using a boring bar. Accuracy was pretty much the same as the original recessed factory crown.

It is so much easier to finish the crown with a piloted 60 degree tool. I have never encountered any detrimental effect finishing a crown that way, and have seen accuracy increase in some cases.

On some hunting rifles with short barrels that have a bulge close to the muzzle, I have counter bored using a 22-250 AI removable pilot reamer. The bore being larger than the 22-250 neck ended up exiting into the shoulder of the AI 'chamber' that was cut... In this case the accuracy was as good as it originally was.

have one on my 308, definitely cuts noise(about .75 deep), can comment on recoil as new barrel it is on is so much heavier that recoil is way less due to that

using the end of the barrel that would be cut off anyway as a back bore is a good idea, but 2" seems nuts to me, just my 0.02. for me the noise and crown protection are the benefits and .75 seems to do it with 308 .
actual details, mine is a kreiger 1:10 twist straight taper(32.125 from bolt face to end of barrel) from 1.35 to 1.15 where crown is .725 deep and .610 bore. crown is flat inside counter bore.

I agree that 2 inches seems excessive. I think 1 inch cut in, where it would normally be cut off completely, should be plenty.

Thanks to all for your input on this. If anyone else wants to add, please feel free.

Just need to see if my local 'smith can do it now.

I always think of this one when this subject comes up.
