What's the average barrel life in approx # of rounds if the barrel is not over heated by long shot strings. Shilen select match heavy barrel is the barrel in question

I have one with about 1400 rounds through it. The last trip to the range put the first 3 into 5/8". Who knows how long it will last. Depends at what level of accuracy you consider it to be worn out.

My old friend from back in Saskatoon has an older 220swift Model 70 with 3100 rounds down the barrel. He said that his accuracy is more or less still repeatable with his pet load now, as it was when he found it @ around 500 rounds. He told me that he doesn't shoot too fast, and his barrel is always barely warm, so I guess that helps. I would guess 4000 rounds would be the final 100 meters of the marathon though...........

I would have to agree with Sgt. Rock because I was 3rd owner of a Ruger # 1 in 220 that I put 500 rds. through, the previous owner did about 1500 and who knows how many the first owner shot, and yet the darn thing would still make MOA groups with a 60 gr. Sierra over a case full of RL17. The bore still looked great through a borescope when I swapped it away.... regretably.

My first Swift made 2300 before the accuracy started to go south.
Then I changed from 50/52 grain pills to 55 grainers and picked up
another 500 accurate rounds.
Even then, It would stay in 1¼moa or so.
I never shot it hot, and kept it clean.
Then I rebarrelled it with a Krieger HB, and it took
over 2500 rounds to wash that one out as well.
I never shot lighter loads, either.
The Swift remains my favorite 22 Centerfire.
Regards, Eagleye.

And with the ease and price of new barrels these days, why not shoot it hot, cold, upside down, and everyway your heart desires. I just shoot the shyte out of all my guns now. I used to worry about shooting them out, but really, life is short and gunsmiths are our friends.

Well said. That's how I treat all my rifles. If they don't get shot they get moved.

Its kinda funny, I have about 15 "keepers" that have passed the test of time and they are regular shooters that fit me great. BUT, I counted the CFC certificates of the rifles/handguns that I have sold/traded off in the last 25 months, and it counted 202. I shoot ALL my guns now with impunity, because I feel like I've done the most exhaustive search of guns I could, and the ones I have are the ones that fit me great. The rest, well...................
