OK so a qucik back storey. I was taught that if you go out with a friend / buddy on a hunting trip (lets just say for the day to hunt deer) if one of you gets one and the other doesnt, its good ettiquit to share SOME meat with the other, say a roast or somthing along those lines, and a bit of burger meat after butchering. does this sound about right to you guys?

So this past weekend i was out with my buddy, hes interesting in starting to hunt do his CORE and PALS, any way, weve been taking his jeep and spliting gas money. Any who im the only one with my PAL and tags, so bag a little fork, nothing worth braggin about, any way skin and hang it, few days later we are goin over butchering the thing, Im no pro but can get the cuts with out butchering the roasts and stuff to a pulp haha. as this was the first deer trip that success when hes been out i was tring to be a good guy and gave him 1/2 of all the prime cuts. so a good chunk of meat for sure! any way his girl friend stops by to see how its going (her dad is a BIG hunter so shes grown up doing it) any way his reply was "good, almost done, me and James (me) just have to fight over who gets this (*points at the big bucket of all the trimmings goin for pepperoni and burger etc*) This left me shocked, is it "right" that he thinks hes entiled to the whole thing, despite being the student in this situation. He seemed pretty annoyed when we cleaned up and i stuck the bucket in my freezer. Am i that outof line here? i did plan on giving him som burger when its ready but now im not to sure.

so im just looking for some input here, any time iv been out with some one, iv been the less experianced and have never expected to get any thing if i didnt bag an animal on the trip. has somthing changed in the etiquitte for hunting?

haha well thanks for your wonderful insite :p

i guess i should say there isnt any drama or hard feelings, i was just shocked by it i guess, especially as i was raised that in the situatuation one should be thankful for any meat they are given from the trip

Its up to you, it your deer and your tag he should expect nothing. In my opinion if you have already given him half the prime cuts its yours.

When I hunt with people we talk about this before hand and work out what we are going to do. And it also depends on where the hunt is. Hunting trip out of town we split, hunting 10min from home everyone is on their own.

My hunting partner and I split everything 50/50, but that was arranged prior to ever hunting. I have the truck, we split fuel and he pays for the sausage order to cover the use of my vehicle. Everyone is happy and knows what to expect.

I've always hunted with the unspoken rule that if you shoot a deer it's yours. However, for the most part my hunting partners got their deer as well and everyone had their meat. If however, some one was running low or needed something to top up a sausage batch they'd just ask if you had any in the freezer and we'd share without a second thought. Seeing that you were splitting expenses perhaps you may have done 50/50 on everything. ( Just a thought)

When I first started hunting in Sask. I did ask what usually happens when someone gets an animal. Folks just said " you shoot it you take it home"

This post made me realize how sad I am that the season is over.

Party of 3 here. When we hunt together the idea is to fill tags regardless who shoots. We're good friends, meat is shared threw the year. nothing complicated.

ya that id agree with, but its the fact he expected to be taking ALL of it home

and Shawn, we were hunting about 5 minutes from his house, over 40min drive for me to get up there

yup thats how iv always hunter with friends befor, 2-3-4 people, were out to fill the tags, regardles but in this situation, (heres where i sound self entitled NOT how i mean it) MY liesence, MY tags, MY gun, id passed up several outting of where i knew big deer were, to get this guy out in the area he plans to hunt in the future to teach him

Ahhhhh ya he's lucky. Usually in that boat one would be happy just to get a few cuts let alone half the deer.

Hunters Ed is free here. Tell him that's the first part to hunting so he can buy a tag.

Good on ya for bringing a new guy out btw

(Btw, I was on here as the AKD in the past. We both shared a lot of 5R info)

My one hunting partner gets better than me.
I supply the rig, fuel, up until late, the hunting licence and tags.
Paid for the rifle, shotgun, 22, scope, rings, ammo and all the trimmings.
I get to gut, skin and take the deer to the butcher.
I pay the butcher and put it in the freezer.
I end up doing the cooking and dishes as well.
I also buy the desert.
I don't mind as I hunt with my daughter.
My other hunting buddy we split the meat.
Only thing I argue about is he can keep his woman and
take mine too.
Here in lies the arguement.
Play nice folks, you never know how long your story is.

Here in Ontario you can party hunt. For me, IF you decide to party hunt, then those that are party hunting split the game meat harvested equally.

Keep in mind that to legally party hunt, those party hunting MUST be present during the hunt... So, no bs like saying 'We're party hunting..." and the guy never shows up for a hunt but claims to deserve meat from successful hunts...

Cheers

With my group of hunters when going after big game, everything is split equally, from gas to butchering to camp food.
When hunting for stuff like rabbits or ducks it goes to the person that wants to do the most cleaning. If you want to keep the 2-3 or 6 rabbits that you shot, no problem. If you want the ones I shot, no problem.

With my friends and I it's 50-50 on the meat no matter who pulls the trigger. After all you share everything else, food, booze, gas , and the dragging right? The shooter gets the rack. simple. If one guy has already got a deer or more on his own then he usually says 'I've got enough meat'

Be thankful for any meat they are given? Thank god I don't hunt with someone who thinks that they are being a good guy by giving me a few morsels even though they tagged the animal. Lets see, you both used HIS vehicle, you both shared gas expenses, you both hunted together, you both shared YOUR tag, you both shared in the work load before, during and after the kill including the butchering...........gee you are a great guy to throw your hunting partner/friend a few tidbits! WOW, your generosity is nothing short of amazing. You must be shooting for a NOBEL prize!! f:P:

I much prefer the guys I hunt with, we have never had to to discuss crap like this. We hunt together, no matter who kills, we split 50/50! It is just an unwritten rule of proper etiquette. Different story if you were hunting alone, paid the expenses, supplied everything and did all the work and then one of the guys you normally hunt with expected to get something but when you both share in the hunt and expense, whether he is a newbie or not, you share in the rewards too. If you are that greedy over a little bit of meat you need to re-evaluate why you hunt. It is cheaper to fill a freezer at the butcher shop than by hunting! Sounds to me like you should hunt alone.

I got out deer hunting one day this fall at a friends place. He dropped me at one of his stands then told me where he was going to be. A couple hours later I hear two quick shots ring out. A few minutes later his wife shows up with the UTV and says he has two deer down. I didn't have to be asked, I unloaded my rifle, put away my stuff, got in the machine and headed off. When I arrived he had two deer down like she said. I gutted both deer, we loaded them on the machine and headed back to the house. He was hunting with his wife and they used their tags that evening. Once there we hung the first one up and when I went to get the second one to hang it up he says go get your truck. He backed the UTV to my truck and we threw the deer in. He said , here, take this one home. He didn't have to do that but he did. Why? Because we are friends, we were all hunting together, because they are not greedy, because that is the way it should be done.....

This year I had to leave two days early because of a work thing....when I left we had zero animals. The next two days saw the rest of the guys tag out....I get a text from my buddy saying "we got three, you get meat after all"

THOSE are the type of people I choose to surround myself with :)
