new to black rifles, XCR or SL8?

The SL8 and XCR fill different roles IMO. The XCR is a combat rifle and the SL8 is a precision semi auto. Yes you could do some serious work on an SL8 to pretty much turn it into a G36 but out of the box it is not meant to fill the same role as the G36.
I would go for the XCR unless a heavy precision semi is what you want. Not saying that the XCR isn't capable of precision but the SL8 is more suited to it.
Plus if Blaxsun is now endorsing the XCR it must mean that they are the greatest rifle of all time cause they can turn their greatest hater in favour of them.

Another vote for the XCR.
From what I've heard with regards to warranty and replacement parts, rob arms and wolverine supplies have been offering great customer service. Availiability of spare parts, different calibers etc made up my mind to get an xcr.
She is a little front heavy with the heavy profile barrel and FAST stock, but my biggest suprise was lack of welded pin on the x39 barrel. Will make putting a new muzzle brake on just that bit easier once she arrives.

I broke mine down into every individual component possible the day i bought it, cleaned and locktited all the threads except the barrel screw and butstock. Neither has ever loosened.
I left the barrel and stock screws free
of threadlock so i could break it down for backpacking. I have not detected
any noticable poi change after numerous barrel removal and replacements either. Its one of those gotta have a feel for it things which isnt the greatest design because a person could screw it up but being one thats got the feel, its just fine for me.
Havent mentioned my flawless round count yet either, aproching 5000 and no signs of wear or failure what so ever.
SL8 is more accurate and if you like the ergonomics and can leave it alone it would be a better rifle for longer range shots. If you plan to modify it you will end up spending a fortune on it. Mags are expensive, the magwell adapter is expensive, stocks are expensive. HK is also not known for customer service.
The XCR is much more customizable and more assault rifle looking. Not as accurate but having access to caliber conversions is a huge advantage when it comes to versatility.

Only in Alex Robinson's mind, sorry... And let's not get too carried away.
The OP has ruled out the Tavor because he's not a fan of the design and the Swiss Arms and ACR due to the increased cost. And by the time you upgrade the SL8 with all the accessories it places it in the same price range as the latter, and since the MR1 isn't in consideration, either - that leaves the XCR-L....
and if you owned a XCR it would be a 1/8th MOA gun out to 1600meters
To stay polite let say that the XCR is a good rifle, i shoot with a friend that own one in 223 and as far as accuracy is concern, it wont even come close to a MR-1 in groups size and less a Swiss Arm,( that what kept me away of a Tavor to ) for me i dont care about the look but it have to be at least as accurate to consider one... This is just my humble opinion but still my # one criteria is PRECISION ... JP.
Just thought you might like to know that Calgary shooting Center has a magwell adapter for the SAN to make it work with STANAG mags
. Or you can always get the NEA lower 
.For me if the NEA lower kept the folding stock it'd be pretty well an ideal setup.

It really comes down to this: The SL8 is going to be more accurate, but to get it to the same level of ergonomics and functionality you're going to have to drop some additional coin on it - to the point where you might as well just get a Swiss Arms or ACR with a NR match barrel. Reliability is probably a toss-up between the two (possible edge to the SL8).
Since the OP has indicated budgetary considerations are a key factor, this really only leaves the MR1 - and contrary to popular belief, no one else really shares caramel's high opinion of it. The additional calibre options for the XCR-L (or the XCR-M) give it an edge in the multi-use roll. Truth be told, a factory NR ACR or Beretta ARX-160 would wipe the playing field - but since both are unobtanium...
