I have a Sig 226 in 40 SW calibre. I recently purchased a 9mm Sig barrel. Could I just drop the 9mm barrel in and shoot the 9mm without affecting function?

Nope, I believe you need the different spring too, the mag might work for 9mm depending on the maker, but you need the 40cal spring.

Do you have a stock 9mm barrel, or a 40-to-9 conversion barrel? AFAIK, the stock 9mm barrel has a smaller OD at the muzzle, and that's a problem. You need to look at the parts included in the conversion kits that they sell as a package.

I dont have a 40-to-9 conversion barrel, just a regular stock barrel

Has anyone tried this?

I measured the muzzle and both appear to have the same diameter so there is no difference on the fit with the slide frame opening.

The 40SW spring is a lot stiffer that I noticed. I guess that is because of the different load.

A friend of mine converted his P226 .40S&W into a 9mm with a barrel, recoil spring and magasine. Absolutely no problem firing 9mm.

Correct ^.

Only "barrel swap" you can do is from a 357 to a 40 and vice versa as the magazine and the spring are the same.

In order to change 40 or 357 to 9mm you need the 9mm barrel and the 9mm spring, some 40cal mags work with 9mm in the 226. I wouldn't try this without the proper spring as this might be dangerous.

Is that all he switched? 9mm barrel, recoil spring and mag? How many rounds did he go through so far with no failures, etc?

I've never heard of a "conversion barrel". I think the 9mm barrel he has is the only one made. The muzzle opening on my 9mm 226 slide and my 40 slide appears to be the same. Unless someone can prove otherwise I believe the barrels are "one and the same".

If the OP has the right barrel, spring and mag I'd say he's safe to try it. That's essentially what the conversion kit is, with the addition of the slide so the conversion is fast as lightning...

I believe you are right with the muzzle openings being the same for both slides. However I thinkthe 9mma nd 40 Sw barrels have minute differences as the 9mm is very clsoe to .38 calibre.

The 9mm bullets range from 115, 124, 135 , while the 40sw is 180 gr.

The 40 sw spring may not fully eject the 115 gr ammo for 9mm but if I use a 135 gr or heavier load, then it should work. What do you guys think?

You must have the correct spring for the barrel and round or I wouldn't try it... the springs are different. I wouldn't want a CGN'r to do something which may be unsafe. I'm sure the correct spring is relatively inexpensive to source from a Sig dealer as well...

Yup, 100% reliable. Shot 200 rounds witrh the converted P226 without any issue. The .40 S&W recoil spring is way too stiff for the 9mm round.
