I know Canada already has the Authorization to Carry (ATC) Permit, and I also know you would be more likely to win the Lottomax than to be issued one. I am simply wondering what everyones thoughts are on the likelyhood of these permits being issued in greater numbers, much like our neighbors to the south? It would seem to me that--be it a long road--if trends continue the way they are, with the LGR abolishment, and the amount of firearms slipping through the cracks of the "Prohibited Firearms" list, that something like a carry permit might not be so absurd to imagine.

From what I have read the government would "simply" need to change the permit from a "may issue" to a "shall issue". I would certainly like to see this in my life. Imagine being able to carry a firearm in public!! Its not even the full extent of what a carry permit would entail, It would just be nice to wear your gun at your hip to go to the range.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe in order to obtain one currently you have to had someone try to kill you.

And were lucky enough to survive and have it happen a second time and survive once more...

I had someone shot right outside my house.........wonder if I could somehow convince my CFO that they were shooting at me and the guy they shot just happened to walk a few inches in front of the gun.

It is not as cut and dry as "having had someone try to kill you". There were 4 or 5 criteria that had to be met in order to be "considered" for an ATC-3 permit. It's all vague BS like "needing to be in imminent danger". Imminent meaning "about to happen". So does somebody need to be on top of me with a knife while I am filling out my permit application? Another one was "where police presence is less than effective". If there is an armed assailent in my house, a police car 2 minutes away is considered less than effective! Every gun owner needs to just start applying for an ATC-3, and as they get denied, start writing a letter to the CFO offices and people in charge! The U.S didn't have country wide carry permits until 1995, so there is hope!

The biggest problem with us as Canadian's is that we don't do anyting about it! Voting, alone, isn't enough. We need to be more active and devoted to a cause! Open carry would be amazing...If I walk into a diner or gas station and every person inside has a gun at their hip, I am generally going to feel safer. No criminal would be stupid enough to rob a place full of armed citizens, lol.

Totally different story tho. As you said in a previous post, I would also LOVE to see it within my lifetime. I just don't see it happening. I hope I'm wrong to tell you the truth.

I think that open carry is probably farther off than concealed carry, but it is sure nice to imagine a Canada with publicly armed citizens. I would feel alot better with my wife having a snub-nosed .357 in her purse too. *continues to day dream*

No thanks, our Gov't is weak.

I have just read a few weeks ago that a large number of ex-convicts , who were not legally allowed to carry firearms, bought hunting licenses in this great country.

So if we allow criminals to carry firearms, you think every Tom, #### and Harry need them aswell????

No offence OP, but if I get in a verbal argument in traffic, I would have to worry about someone putting a gun in my face?
Not everyone is perfect, sane or makes correct decisions 100% of the time.....................

I was watching this US show called Mountain Men, and noticed that some of the guys had handguns in holsters while they went about hunting and checking traps - and it makes so much sense, but here in Canada, we just can't be trusted to use a tool as it was intended.

People will say but you have a rifle/shotgun, what do you need a handgun for in the woods? So what if your gun jams, or you slip and drop your gun backing away from a wolf, bear, etc. - the handgun is a backup/insurance. I think this may be a better/legitimate reason for an open carry argument than making the case for strolling into Walmart with a Glock on one's hip.

That said, my town has no police station, we "borrow" police from our larger southern municipality and they do periodic sweeps, speed traps, etc. - yet our town has had murders, bank robberies, so people tolerate the limited police presence because generally our area is quite safe, but with continued police budget cuts, and economic hardships - one wonders if an argument may eventually be made for open carry for communities with limited police resources, there's certainly a legitimate debate to be had, but unfortunately I think it'll all fall on deaf ears until something terrible happens to encourage the concept of people becoming more self reliant.

Hard to believe that this country was carved out of the wilderness by pioneers, now I laugh whenever I see healthy young people just standing on a escalator, too lazy to even climb a step. It's all very sad and pathetic.

So, does the Gov't's rules protect you in every faucet of your life or just when it comes to who you think should or shouldn't be allowed to carry a firearm?

You should go visit Arizona and maybe your eyes will be opened. I haven't had any "guns put in my face".

The Gov't hardly protects me anyhow, I do not feel threatened enough where I live to ever consider having a concealed weapon. Perhaps in another larger urban area with higher criminal activity???? I am not sure.
Like mentioned above, if you use one as a tool for your job (hunting, trapping) sure. I just feel locally, everyone would want one 'cuz he has it....for the coolness factor, not for protection....not for a need.

We will all have different opinions on the matter, and we will all disagree. This thread will just spiral out of control.
