So my gf would like her own gun to shoot, at the moment she doesn't have a PAL so I would be buying it and holding onto it in my safe for her until she gets her PAL (which she plans to do), but it would be hers to use when she is with me in the bush/camping/range. So Im thinking I will just get it for her for christmas, just looking at getting her a .22 to start out with and I was eyeballing the Marlin model 795 as the price is good and reviews are good and she likes it (we were looking at rimfires on wholesale sports' site last night).
Would like to stay under $200, does anyone have any suggestions? and places I can buy at online with a promo/coupon code for free shipping or a discount of some sort would be ideal but not absolutely necessary. Basspro has a free shipping offer but they don't ship firearms...I am disappointed.
The store here in town has a small selection, they had some for under $200 but I forget if any were the Marlin 795, I need to go back and check this week, but If i order online my deadline would be the 5th or 6th so that it arrives before xmas.

The Marlins are good. The Savage semi's are good as well. If you're looking for a bolt there are Marlin's and Savages under $200.

I guess it would depend on where you are located.

The 795 is the only .22semi I own, you won't regret getting one for her. Only downside is the iron sights (pretty crappy) and a heavy trigger. All the new/stock semis are guilty of that in that price range though, at least the ones I've tried. I was planning on scoping mine, so the sights didn't matter to me.

Wont go wrong with the Marlin 795.Best semi-22 out of the box. I got mine from Cabelas with a spare mag and delivered for about 2 hundred bucks.Fast delivery too.

Buying a gun in this situation is like buying an engagement ring . . . sort of . . . a month's wages should do nicely.
I met a young man buying a first .22 and he dropped over 800 $'s.
A CZ455 scoped would be nice.
You did not say how old she is!
Since it is a GF, are you sure that what you are getting if (and when) you get it back!

I did this for my wife also, but I went with a bolt instead of a semi until I was sure she had a sold grasp on safe gun handling. I like the savage 93 series rimfires. They are well made, very accurate and not very expensive even when new. You can check Cabelas.ca their prices are usually pretty fair from what I've seen. Or you can usually find fair priced ones on the EE if you wanted to go used. That's where I picked up my wife's .17HMR. She said if I could find her a zebra patterned rifle (she has a sick addiction to anything zebra) she would learn to shoot and take her hunting/firearms course. This is what she ended up with.. Am I proud of what I did? No.. Was it worth it to get her into the sport? Absolutely! She loves it. And there's usually no questions asked when I want something new to take up a spot on the gun rack as long as she gets to shoot it too ;) So good on you for bringing forth another gun nut!

Sbarkowsk, Awesome to see another girl getting into the sport. That is once crazy paint job as well

Thanks, she grew up in a "guns kill people" kind of house so it was an uphill battle for sure. She won't hunt which is fine, but she'll bust targets until she's out of ammo and then ask me why the hell I didnt buy more ammo lol.

How is the Savage model 64? They have one at the local store here after taxes it would run me $184. For $195 I can order the Marlin 795 from WSS (that's after shipping). I seem to be finding mixed reviews on it, some say it is a great starter and others say it jams a lot. I haven't read any negative things on the 795 other than the stock feeling "cheap". She isn't going to be firing the gun as fast as possible, just shooting at pop cans/dyed water and stuff I set up for her, shes a pretty good shot with my cooey.

I got my spousal unit a Savage Mk2 with the synthetic stock and a scope.
She really liked it, but then I got a nice Boyd's stock for it on the EE. She went absolutely gaa-gaa over it.
So I'd recommend something with a nice wood stock.

Ended up getting her a savage 64f that they had at the local store here. It didn't feel too cheap, the magazine is metal not plastic. Seems like decent gun, I'm fairly certain she will be very happy when she unwraps it.
