Thanks,
I'll start with 38gr of Varget and work it up
Why not refer to Hodgdon's website for this data?
Why not refer to Hodgdon's website for this data? 38 gr of Varget with 168 gr bullet is below their starting load (42). Was never impressed with Varget until I started using Hodgdon website for data.
what weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers?
168 grains of one bullet is the same as 168 for another. Use the same data as a starting point and all loads need to be fine tuned to your gun anyway. Every batch of powder and evry gun is different, so asking form someone else's recipe is moot.
I saw that the 168gn match bullet is longer than the 168gn SMK... so it takes more space in the brass...so less space for powder for the same pressure... I wasn't asking for recipe but for data..... And buy data I meant minimum load...maximum load...
Lapua brass,WLRP, 168gr. A-MAX, 2.80" OAL and 45.0gr. Varget. Great accuracy and sane pressures.
This is exactly why you work up a load. Paperslayer is correct use Hogdon min max data doesn't matter what type of bullet 168 data could be interchanged. Work up to a max for your rifle. If you look at the rifle use to test loads in reloading manuals the rifle will be different than yours. By your logic you have to buy the same rifle in order shoot the same loads. Good luck.
Thanks! Do you know the maximum load for varget?
From recollection, I believe it's around 47gr. according to my Hornady manual. I could care less about maximum - I load for accuracy. FWIW, most known accurate 165gr.-168gr. bullet loads with Varget are between 44gr.-46gr. depending on chamber dimensions, individual bullet, seating depth, case used, primer selection ad naseum. A good quality match barrel should shoot that combination with acceptable results.
