Hi all,

I was just putting together some loads in my new .223 using Varget (I dont have any H335/Benchmark/TAC or the other 'better' 223 powders on hand). I am loading 55gr Vmax into new FL sized Winchester brass. OAL is 2.24" (near max).

I see some manuals list as high as 27.5gr of Varget for a 55gr bullet. I loaded to 26gr and it is quite compressed, even 25gr is compressed. I doubt I could even get 27gr into the case (drop tube perhaps?). 26gr is up to the top of the shoulder already.

Who has used Varget in the .223 with 55gr Vmax and what charges do you load?

Just interested to see how much you guys compress the powder. I have compressed Varget lightly in a .308 before but in the .223 its squashed!

Cheers

26.7 grs of varget with a lake city 55 grn fmj and it is compressed, pour it in slow to the funnel and it seems to settle better a little below the rim. Doesn't seem to matter the brass manufacturer, fwiw.

Loader up if you arnt having pressure problems. I use 27gr (over 2gr above the book max) with berger 60gr fb. They shoot really good. I would check to see what col you can use in your rifle not what the book says. None of my loads are to the books col. With a 1f winchester case you should be able to get 27.5gr of varget into it with a bullet on top(yes I have done it many times and never seen pressure signs). Berger's data for the 77gr is 20-22.Xgr for varget. That was insanely slow. I'm running 24gr (also 2gr above max) and it shoots very very well. The 77gr arnt suppose to stabilize in a 1-9 twist but they work awesome. Work up to your rifles max. I use the books as a starting guide and thats all.

Thanks,
I definately have to take more accurate measurements of my rifle's max OAL.

If 26 gives me good accuracy and at least 3000fps, which I am sure it will, (250yard coyote load) I'll be happy and then tweak the OAL for best accuracy.

Should get more then 3000fps with 26gr. Im getting 3050 with 25.7gr and 53gr vmax. I found for vmax in my rifle it doesnt matter if they are seated to the lands or to my depth of 2.244" the accuracy is hte same. All my other loads are seated to mag length which happens to be just off the lands

I run 26.5g varget under 55grn V-max.getting 3250fps over chrony.these are from a Savage Axis.

When my factory barrel was nicely worn in;), I work up a load of 27.0gr of Varget under 70gr Berger VLDs. I use a 5" tube and the compression was minimal. My sphincter was a little tight for the first few, but all was ok. :)

***don't try this load at home, I'm a trained professional***:p
