Just wanted to say hey!! New to the forum and looking to get my first 22....

I currently have a Savage Axis XP Stainless in .270 WIN for hunting but want to get a Ruger 10/22 for target shooting mainly... Maybe some grouse and rabbit hunting too.. Any suggestions on mods to do right off the bat?
 
For the 10/22 there are really two main paths you can go with. Well three if you include the "tactical" route.

The two paths I mean is 'heavy' and 'light'

Heavy is getting into heavy bull barrels and the more precision target route.

Light is trying to go with a light setup with a carbon fibre or standard barrel, light composite stock and light optics or iron sights.

What are you more interested in? I would say light makes for a more versatile hunting/target combo.

First thing to do is pick your baseline. Either a 10/22 Target if you want to go heavy, or just get a standard 10/22 with composite stock as a start if you want to go light. There is a whole world of choices out there once you get into accessories and mods.
 
I kinda wanted to build something tactical style... I see you are in Victoria, I am in Sooke.. Was probably gonna get my 10/22 at Pullens and then go from there on modifying it..
 
Why not just build one from scratch?? Cheaper then buying a gun then changing all the parts on it. Plus if you build it its exactly what you want lol and its a fun project
 
Never thought of that... Where would be my best start for parts?? Was thinking tactical sniper style.... Maybe the houge stock with bipod... Heavy barrel, and ACOG 9X32 scope... Would it be cheaper to just build it from parts??

Dlask arms has receivers and barrels and houge stocks, mystic has barrels and stocks, some parts can be bought from the usa(not many though). It takes some searching but many people do it. I am looking at parts right now for a build.
Is it cheaper? well you dont have to buy a gun then spend the money replacing every part with aftermarket. So I guess yes it can be. Imagine buying a car and replacing every single part with aftermarket. It would have been cheaper just to buy the parts instead of the whole factory car. Same sort of deal

Welcome to CGN! Great idea getting into .22lr, tons of options to choose from with rifles/options. Someone will say it eventually, so I'll be the "bad" guy. :) Not sure if you're coming-around to the 10/22 idea naturally...or if the 9/10 topics here being 10/22-related has influenced you...but explore the options. (if you haven't already) "Tactical Sniper Style" screams "Savage Mark II TRR-SR" to me or in English..a black bolt action. lol Semi shooters like semi guns, so a 10/22 "build" might be your thing. It's highly unlikely that a 10/22 build will cost you less than the Mark II model I just mentioned, and also highly unlikely it'll be more accurate until you're up to the 1.25x - 2x the price range of the Savage with your modifications. At that point, it's barely "Ruger" anyway.

Stock, Ruger carbines with improved triggers, extended charging handles and bolt buffers are about where my affection ends for those guns..but millions would disagree with me. :) Have fun with whatever you get!
 
If you are wanting a "Tactical Sniper" style rifle and you don't mind the bolt action then maybe a Savage Mark II would be a better option.
