Norinco M14 Clone

Was looking at buying a couple milspec rifles, a M24 and a M14 specifically. Finding either has been fruitless in Canada so far. I'm commited to getting the M24 but when it comes to the M14 I'm less firm.

If you have one of the Norinco M14 clones can you share some feedback regarding them? I'm looking for 200yd accuracy anecdotes, reliability, appearence, etc. What do you think of your's? They look pretty snappy from the pics I've seen and from what I've read so far they'll use any M14 accessory, stock etc.

Well happy with my Norc, handloads has got it down to about 1.5 moa, and its never missed a beat. You can get a nice one for around 400 on the EE.

For the rifle itself? I'd like to pay less than $2500 if I can for the M14/Clone. Depends on if it's authentic, condition, etc. I wouldn't spend that much on a clone but a real Springfield Armories one with the flash suppresor vs. the muzzle brake, new condition etc. would be worth the money I think.

I've been asked that question many times by now and I have no better answer than "I really want one." Certainly I can buy better/cheaper/###ier rifles if I were so motivated but the M24 has a type of mythology attached to it for me. In addition I believe in the robustness and the accuracy of the platform. I can't make an argument against buying something else but that doesn't mean I would :)

No, no, no. That is not real either, it too is a copy and SA INC is not the real Springfield Armory they just use the name (real M14 rifles like TRW, HR, Winchester and the original SA are prohibited).
If you have $2500 for a top of the line M14 style rifle I would suggest you either get a complete LRB rifle imported or get one built using a forged norc receiver fitted with all usgi parts. The latter can be hard to source.

Pictured below is one of my old M14 clones, norc forged receiver with all usgi parts built for me by a gunsmith (M14doc). That is as real as it gets. Build cost was around $2400.

A stock norc will do just fine however, just get er tuned and slap her into a usgi stock.

Nice looking rifle. I should have been clearer in what I wanted. My goal is to take a M14/Clone and copy the M21/25 platform. That's what I meant by the Springfield Armory, fingers are just faster than brain. Doing a build to get what I want isn't off the table, in fact it's likely exactly what I'll need to do.

I wanted to get feedback on the Norinco clone and if people are happy with it start with that. Sorry for the confusion.
 
aint a damn thing wrong with an m24- you gots good taste there and that will be a setup worthy of some intense envy if you get an m24 + M25. Just make sure to post pics :)
My bolt gun is very likely going to be 308 to go along with my m25(ish) wanna be.


Since youre planning on scoping it I would be wary of springfield- good few of their receivers are out of spec and dont respond well to some scope mounts.

In that case, I'd get a Smith Enterprise or LRB M14 receiver and keep your eyes open for a CA M14 in the EE, then get a gunsmith to strip the parts off it and put them on the new semi-only receiver.
 
Any stocks to recommend for the M21/25 clone? I'd prefer something synthetic and if possible in a camo pattern.
 
There's an LRB m14 thats mostly USGI parts in the EE right now. Armtac can get you an LRB M25 with as many USGI parts as you can afford.
 
There are two books to read before spending a lot of money on an M14 clone. The first is the big coffee table book from Collector Grade Publications that describes the process from someone deciding the Garand wasn't adequate for future wars through to the USAMTU tuned M14 sniper rifles. The other is just as interesting, but no pictures. CGN member Different has an online book which he updates periodically, and it has extensive coverage of the civilian M14 clones after the US Army went to the M16.

In my opinion, the M14 was never a perfect rifle. A great deal of the improvements were hard-earned by experimenting and trials, to fix things that should never have been allowed in the first place.

To the original poster's question, USGI parts are not necessarily interchangeable with everything on Norincos. Threads are different. Fitting varies widely. Steel goes from butter to diamond hardness, often between Chinese import lots too. Stocks are not drop in fit either, because the M14 has go fast parts and the Chinese rifle do not. For example, one particular pin wants to go dancing unless there is a piece of popsicle stick glued in as a block.

The Norinco stocks range from balsa-like wood through some adequate hardwood to really pretty hardwood and synthetic. The latest batchs have black synthetic. These also come in some version of Chinese woodland camo and green plastic. Haven't examined one closely, but the guys seem more interested in trading them out for fancy all-singing all-dancing metal chassis style stocks. Supposedy these are better.

There are USGI wood and fibreglass stocks around. These are attractive all by themselves.
 
I'm almost exactly $2500 invested into a Norinco build (before optics). Norc reciever, bolt, trigger, and op rod but everything else is Sadlak, SA, ect...

On week 10 for the Krieger barrel right now... Any day now...

Can you provide me a link? I went looking but wasn't able to find it. I just got access to the EE forums today so I'm not sure which area I would be looking in.

Thanks for the suggestions on reading maple_leaf_eh. I'll definitely go looking for it. The more I've read and found the more I am leaning to the Norincos for the time being. I've got the ~$6k saved up already for when I'm able to locate a M24 but I'll be spending ahead if I go too deep for the M21/25. I have an eye to a more long term project for it anyway. Gathering parts as I'm able, getting them custom fitted etc.

You're right, the Garand rifle wasn't/isn't perfect. But then again if I wanted perfection I'd be leaning to a boutique rifle as pointed out earlier.
