I appologize in advance for upsetting anybody's apple cart, and to those who think I'm a know-it-all jerk. My goal is to simply try and mitigate another round of T97 fiasco in this country.
It is my opinion, yes I said "opinion", that it has been strongly implied (at the very least) on this board over the last several days that a new FRT# has been issued for a "Type 97" rifle made in China with a 19.5" barrel which has been classified as "non-restricted".
I checked the FRT and no such FRT# currently exisits (as Dec. 5, 2012) when searching through T97, T97A, T95, QBZ-95 or related firearms.
What there is:
Type 95 - FRT 126102 (dash 1, 2, 6, 7, 9) - 5.8X42 CHINESE - various barrel lengths - all Prohibited
Type 97 - FRT 126110 (dash 1-9) - 5.56MM NATO (-9 is 9MM NATO) - various barrel lengths - all Prohibited
Type 97A - FRT 127807-1 - 5.56MM NATO - 490mm barrel (19.3") - Prohibited
Type 97A - FRT 129254 (dash 1-4) - 223 REM - 480mm barrel (18.9") - all Prohibited
Type 97A - FRT 129257 (dash 1-9) - 223 REM - various barrel lengths - all Prohibited
Type 97A Sniper Rifle - FRT 129752 (dash 1 and 2) - 5.56MM NATO - 620mm barrel (24.5") - Non-restricted (this is the T88 sniper being sold by T.I.)
So, somebody please tell me that this firearm that everyone has been whipped into a frenzy over is listed under some different name somewhere in the FRT.
If the plan is to wait until the firearms are made, then shipped to Canada, then a sample is submitted for classification - and the importer is confident that the firearm will be classified as non-restricted - I think that is legitimate as well, but people need to be told this if pre-orders are being taken. If people are being told that an FRT# for a non-res 19.5" T97 already exists - or they are allowed to continue in that belief when it is not the case - I personally feel that is unfair.
Anything called a "T97" has baggage in this country. There needs to be some special attention attention paid to this in the case of any "T97". I want to see the T97 come back to this country, and I totally believe it can and will be done, but at this point I don't believe there has been a full and fair disclosure of a crucial point. If it is in the FRT somewhere and I am just not seeing, please let me know. I want this to work too.
