The title almost says it all. New Model 200 in either 223 or 22-250 are rare indeed. So what is the next best, bang for your buck. inexpensive, accurate, potential project gun with decent after market bits and pieces?
I'm looking new at this point and I only read bad things about the Axia or Axis or whatever it is so lets rule that one out.

Try to find a used savage or stevens, if its a project rifle then it doesn't sound as if your interested in the factory barrel anyways.......
Look for a savage combo deal, buy now or wait until boxing day, or look a little harder for the Stevens, I know their out there, there are a couple smaller shops that are also supporting dealers that carry them, where is Scott McDonald when you need him to chime in?

Savage combo deal?? Not familiar with Savage so what combo deal are you referring to??

Cabelas is looking mighty good right now and my trigger finger is itching something fierce right now.

savage model 111 fx I believe, rifle/scope combo priced just a little higher then the stevens 200.
The Marlin has the same barrel nut set up and almost the same aftermarket following a little better factory stock, but the option of buying factory take off barrels or used match barrels may be the limiting factor.....

If your planning on a build down the road then just look for any long/short action stevens and use it as a donor action only

Dont feel too bad about not being able to find a Stevens model 200. I had one in .223. Boy did it shoot, but the magazine was horrible and had constant feeding issues.

Marlin FX7?
You reckon its a better route to take?

For sure, I was having the same problem of what rifle to buy and was looking for a stevens, a friend of mine put me on to the marlin xs7 so I did the research, bought the rifle and have not looked back. I am very pleased with it. It is an awesome shooter that will keep up with, and out shoot alot of more expensive rifles and I am only using federal fusion ammo. As for aftermarket the stevens has the marlin beat, but out of the box the marlin is way out in front. Better stock, better trigger, and it even comes with a one piece base. If you are just looking for a solid hunting rifle the marlin xs7 is the answer. I have since upgraded the stock on mine to a Boyds nutmeg laminate (139$ tax and shipping included to my door in 7 days), and topped it off with a Redfield revolution 3x9x40. All my friend with winchesters, remingtons, tikkas, and rugers love the look of the marlin and are amazed at how well it shoots. I would recommend a marlin xs7 to anyone looking for a solid rifle... come to think of it I might just buy another one myself maybe a VH model.

I to was looking at picking up a Stevens 200 in 223 for this winter for some yotes, but once I started looking I noticed that there was a big demand for them and couldnt find them any where. Im not in a hurry so I think Im just going to wait it out some and just use my 270 for yotes this year.

I want this gun because of all the tinkering I wanna do to it.

titch--, be sure to try some 100 gr Speers in your 270. They have been very accurate in every rifle I have tried them in, and dump dogs instantly! Always keep a box around here for just that.

Will be glad to send you a few to try if you can't find them locally.

I was looking all over the place for some 100 grainers, but couldnt find any. WSS had some Rem core lokt 100's, but in Calgary. Went to order them but it was like 30 bucks for 20 rounds. Said no thanks to that.

I loaded some 110gr V-max in my 270. Very mild load with 59.5gr of H4831. NIce low recoil and way more umph than needed for coyotes. These can be bought at WWS.

To the OP there is a 223 marlin Varmint on the EE right now. Great deal.

I had the guys in the Regina WSS running around looking for something lighter than 130, but couldnt find nothing except the core lokt in 100's. Might have to try again.

I was just thinking of testing the skillz and trying the ole headshot with the 130's.
