My rpal should be in this week!!!!!! i'm so stuck on if i'm going to buy the glock 17 gen 4 or the sti GP6, this is for just having fun and getting a start in ipsc and idpa

If it's your first handgun, get a used Glock in 9mm and a few thousand rounds of ammo and learn to shoot.
They are reliable, relatively cheap, easy to work on yourself, and in 9mm will be somewhat affordable to feed...even at high volumes.

Try out as many pistols on the range as possible along the way.

I agree with TACTICAL111's advice. The Glock is far more common (easier to find accessories/parts and easy resale if you decide to move on). The G17 will allow you to shoot both IPSC (Production) and IDPA (SSP) with a minimum of investment.

I assumed the STI was a 1911 platform, and then got curious and checked before responding. If it had been a 1911 it would have been an "apples to oranges" discussion, but seeing what the GP6 is, it made my answer easy.

go with the STI. much better firearm overall.

That's a first. Not sure sure how much experience you have had with those but I don't see how anyone could think they are a much better firearm overall than a G17. I like STI as a company and own a Trojan but the GP6 is a different animal.

I would never pick it over the G17. Although I always tell a shooter to try different firearms and see what they like as different firearms suit different individuals.

will be easier to get aftermarket parts and holsters for the glock. Theres allways a few of them at a match so if something breaks there is a good chance someone there has the part you need

If you only have acess to a Glock and GP6 go with the Glock. If you want to step up a notch go with the M&P. The Gen 4 Glocks in 9MM have not been stalwerts of reliability though you might get lucky. I have heard most of the issues have been resolved. The G34 is a great gun but not allowed in IPSC.

It's definitely allowed Bob. Just not in production.

Of course you are right but shooting minor in Standard Division maybe fun and rewarding but most lkely not a gun that will put you in the winners circle frequently. Works well is USPSA Production though and the most popular gun in SSP Division at the US IDPA Nationals.

Yeah I have a G34 but am now using a G35 for Standard. I use my Trojan 9mm for Classic and my Tanfoglio Stock III for Production. IPSC has had a match every week throughout the winter this year. Just awesome!

No one has stated what the problem is with the sti GP6, i'm reading great reviews and great you tube reviews and specially for a lefty with all its controls being ambi. So now i'm confused. Can anyone tell me exactly what the problems are? just stay away from them, well why. I know guns are very personal and guys can get very very brand loyal. being new, i'm not partial to any brand yet, jsut need an ambi pistol.

If you want ambi you have the M&P series and the CZ 85 Combat to name two others. I have never heard of any problems with the GP6. I know of guys using them in IDPA. Not a gun you see frequently though.

the 85 was one of the first guns i looked, well online anyway, i don't know anyone who has one. The cz quality is certainly a plus. I've had the chance to shoot the m&p but the trigger has so much creep before the shot goes off. Coming from a hunting background and shooting long distances, the creep is exactly what i looked for in a gun i was trying to stay away from so not a fan of the m&p. That being said, and new, i'm not sure what is more desireable. Assuming a crisp trigger with little creep being better. Alot of reviews on the GP6 talk about how the trigger feels like a trigger thats had a 300.00 job on it and how accurate the barrel is as compared to alot of the other ones out of the box.
I dont' have access to alot of 9mm pistols so its really a leap of faith for me. I really appreciate all the great help on here.
I thought i was sold on the glock but i find it cumbersome being a lefty with smallish hands when using the slide lock, maybe its just aobut finding a comfortable way for me to operate it and getting use to the pistol, or i should just get a fully ambi pistol right from the get go. CZ85 certainly on the list!

That's one thing. I operate the mag release with my middle finger and the slide release with my index finger.
Of course I'm nowhere near as fast as using my strong hand, but then again I haven't really worked hard at it.

or i should just get a fully ambi pistol right from the get go

Only you can answer that one.
