30-30 is a heck of a round that has put down game for over 100 years. Some people seam to think that because its got less powder than a 308 or 7mm it's to small for something like an Alaskan moose.

Anyway enjoy this good watch.

What a great picture! Don't know why we don't take more like that.

Yes, the 30-30 is still plenty for moose. Old fellow up here killed a huge one around sixty miles up the highway north of Watson Lake about twenty years ago. Factory ammo at less than 100 yd, and he dropped an 85", yes eighty-five inch, bull with his beat-up Model 94.

No one is saying that it cant be done. And to be closer to reality, a 30.30 has half the powder of a .308 and half the energy, and making a comparison to 7mm is like comparing a Moped to a Harley. Further to this, natives used to shoot moose with a .22 with some success, maybe you can find a video of that as well? I shoot deer up to 100yards with my 30.30 as a bush gun. It has severe limitations for anything bigger or further.

Limitations yes, but severe? I wouldn't go quite that far..The majority or those who use a 30-30 for moose well know the limitations, and are using it because it is suited to where they hunt...That and a 30-30 is well capable of taking game, including moose out to 175yds without issue, and 200 being ''my'' limit for the cartrige...If you feel the 30-30 is severely limited out to 100yds on anything bigger than deer, I would say that ''your'' limitations far exceed that of the 30-30...

You never came right out and said it, but did strongly suggest that one would be severely handicapped using a 30-30 on anything bigger than deer..

I hunt with a guy who used 30-30 for moose for years and had no issues. It does have limitations but as long as you know them it is good to go for Moose. Some people bash the older chamberings and some people bash the newer ones. I like them all.......except there is somthing about short mags that rub me the wrong way...lol. If i could only keep a few guns my 94 30-30 would definitley be on the list.

More than likely it's not the 30.30 holding you back, it's you holding it back. If one is uncomfortable with the shot or has open sights or something that is another story but the shot is there on moose up to 200 yards with 30.30. Not only is it possible, but effective. A 30.30 is limiting in the sense that it is usually in a open-sights carbine and not usually the gun of choice for 200 yards, but the caliber is not limiting. There are plenty of hunters and dead moose who can vouch for this.

I think this is the problem many face... Something doesn't work for them for whatever reason so they look down on others that don't have such issues.

As I have said before I know hunters that have no problem filling their tags/freezer each year with deer and bear using only a 30/30.
 
The manufacturers have done a good job of making everyone think they need the latest short ultra mag to take down gophers. Long live the 30-30.

You do realize that your 30-30 hits as hard at 200 yd as a 30-06 does at 400 right?

I know an outfitter in nfld that has never shot a moose with anything other than a 30-30. I don't know how they downed moose in the 1800's...
 
I have never got involved in the 30-30 vs the other cartridge for big game. I just happened upon this thread and I guess I will ask - although 30-30 is fine (perhaps with some limitations?) for moose, if there are better cartridges out there why not use them instead?

No matter what you use there are limitations...If you work within those limitations, then you have the right tool for the job...
