Just bought my first pistol today after passing my restricted test yesterday. (A friend bought it and will be Holding it until my license comes in a few months)
I bought an S&W M&P 9mm range kit. I had the opportunity to shoot a Glock 19, a 1911 and an M&P 40 and I liked how the M&P felt in my hands but I wanted something in 9mm for my first pistol.

Just curious, is there anything I need to know about this gun? Break in, special maintenance, must do modifications? Are there any upgrade parts out there and if so, who sells them?

Thanks in advance for any advice

There are plenty of threads about guys and there M&P pistols, although searching sometimes can be a pain. Most seem to really enjoy them, and have fired thousands of rounds without problem. Seems like a great gun considering the price and the relatively good reviews it's getting. I personally can't get over the look of it myself, but never have shot one. Perhaps I'll give it a try one of these days.

Also if you don't take it out shooting at least once a week, your d*ck falls off. True story, happened to a friend of a friend of a cousin of a roommates sisters boyfriend once.

Expect the trigger to be a bit gritty for at least the first few couple hundred rounds. It takes that long for the trigger to break in. After that, you can decide for yourself if you want an APEX trigger kit. It's a great upgrade, and I love mine, but I would say try out the stock trigger for a minimum of 1000 rounds be fore you swap out any trigger parts.

Besides that, nut much to know about the gun in particular. It's easy to use and clean, so just concentrate on improving your shooting skills. Get an instructor or an experienced friend to give you pointers when you are shooting.

And yeah, buy lots of ammo.

Excellent. Glad I asked as I wouldnt have known to just deal with the trigger for a while until its broken in. Im looking into cases of 9mm, that will be my next purchase for sure.
Thanks again.

Don't bother/worry about the trigger at all. Enjoy it for what it is...an awesome machine. I have a couple thousand rds through the MP9 and a thousand or so through the VTAC MP9...both are great to go right out of the box. DO try all handsrtraps. Med "felt" best at first, but shots were erratic. Moved to the large and now the shots go where aimed.

As above:
Try all the sizes of the backstraps, they can be strange at times, sometime the small grip works best for big hands and sometime the large backstrap works best for small handed people.

Once the gun is broken in Apex is the only name you need to know for upgrades.

And don't post in a week that the gun shoots low-right. It's not the gun, it's the shooter.

Slide drop reloads...lol

The one and only reason I won't buy one...
The m&p is a great gun, but I don't want to train with a pistol that does something 95% of the time. That 5% chance of the slide not running forward on its own really matters when it matters.

That being said, can you imagine the disgust in my eyes when my $1k g19 did it!!!

^i don't really see a problem with it.

train like you train with any firearm that doesn't do that...and if the slide happens to drop during a reload - bonus!

i've used it in competition, can't say i'm slower with it or without it...but then again you never run dry...:)

Kinda funny I read your post, I had to aim mine to the lower right corner of the target to get even remotely near the black on the paper when I first got it (also my first handgun)
I'll be saving your picture to try and improve my shooting (still very new to shooting handguns)

What is a "slide drop reload"? Im assuming (duh) its something to do with mag changes (hehe... im really bright). But ive never heard that term. Just curious what its all about.

Im only going to be doing some fun 3 gun style shoots at my local club with this thing. Nothing serious so if something on it isnt perfect (from my own experience elsewhere, nothing is perfect) its not going to ruin my day. I paid $600 for the kit very VERY lightly used (few hundred rounds tops). I originally bought a brand new kit from Wanstalls. But the same day I found the same thing in perfect condition at Accuracy Plus so I cancelled my order and bought that one instead. Saved me nearly $200. So for $600 im pretty happy with what I got.

It's when the slide releases and goes forward into battery when you seat a magazine with a fair amount of force. It can happen on most pistols if you smack in the magazine hard enough. Have seen it happen on 92s, Glocks and 1911s. Only happens on my M&P if I really slam it home.

I've owned a Glock 17 3rd gen and a CZ sp01 shadow, sold them both...I'm now very content with my M&P .40 and have the 9mm Storm Lake barrel coming, soon I hope lol...I love the gun and range kit..Excellent semi and excellent package. Now some dude let me fire his Smith and Wesson .44 magnum revolver at the range a while back and damn I'm fixated on that revolver...Gotta have one lol

you have to give it some but push up and forward at an angle to get that slide to drop. the way a pistol is angled and most ppls body mechanics its not too hard.
not a real feature, just something interesting that a lot of semi autos can do...it just happens the m&p do it a lot and with effort most people can do consistently. happens with my cz-sp01 shadow when i'm really going and under stress - like 1 out of 20 times.

when it does happen you just keep runin n gunin without really skipping a beat.

I have an M&P 9. It's my 4th handgun, and I like it a lot. I like it much better after upgrading the trigger with the APEX duty/carry kit and RAM.

Nice gun, natural pointer for me and my hands, not like a Glock which I could never shoot well. Mine was a bit temperamental at first, but it's all good now. Took some 500 rounds and it likes to be lubed.

If you want to get the feel for the Apex kit, either the Competition Kit or the Duty Kit take the slide off the gun and then pull the trigger. The kits are that good. Much depends on what you want the gun for. I wouldn;t shoot 1K rounds aka 20 boxes of ammo only to find out the trigger is still a bit gritty and not to my liking. If you want a 5#+ trigger go with the Duty Kit, if you want a 2.5# trigger go with the Competition Kit. If all you want to do is clean up the trigger install an Apex USB.

Lots of choices, enjoy the gun.

Take Care

Bob
