Re : Canadian obsession with an American Rifle

My suggestions for future CGN obsessions are the Ross (any version, although I've heard the .280 factory Sporter was to die for) or the FN products (C1A1 in particular; if anyone has one I'd love to see it). These rifles deserve our attention as well - and you sure as heckfire don't have to pay $1300 for the silly thing.

I would love to own a C1A1, or a Brit L1A1, but unfortunately our government doesn't trust us with them, and those that are out there are limited to 1/4 of their intended capacity. My understanding is that most of our FN's have already been melted down.

We are still allowed to own M1's, (for the moment) in unadulterated original condition, and we can use them anywhere. And it was the BEST rifle of WWII; The No. 1 Mk III was the best rifle of WWI.

As much as I'd love one I'll NEVER own one at the prices people are asking for them. It's ridiculous.

If you want one keep your eyes open Jfred. I picked mine up this time last year, an all matching Dane with a VG+ bore on the EE for $812 shipped. One was on there two days ago at $850. Deals can still be had.

I do agree though, fresh rebuilds at $2k are about 2.5x too high. As stated above my as issued one was 1/3 that price!

There's another reason we love the Garand: that 8 round clip.

Thanks to our stupid fu*king laws regarding magazine capacity (thanks a lot Kim Campbell) this is the only semi-auto battle rifle that I know of that doesn't have to have its magazine pinned to 5 rounds!!

Not only is it the finest Battle Rifle designed by a designer born in Canada, during the Second World War Canada purchased 8,000 of them. They stayed in service until the early '50's primarily for airfield ground defence in Europe.

I'm cheap so I'll stick with my SVT40s.

Other than the longer length and front heavy balance of the SVT; I fail to see what the Garand does that the SVT does not do better.
Higher capacity...check.
Full size battle round...tie there
Removeable magazine...check( can't even top up a Garand, nice...and what's the finger pinching thing again?)
Ability as far as a Sniper rifle...check ( without that silly offset scope mount)
Buy 3 SVT's for the price of 1 Garand...let me think about that a minute, OK I'll take the SVT40 with the cheap surplus ammo by the crate please.
And yes, the M-14 addressed many of the M1's fault's, undoubtably the M-14 is a better weapon than an SVT. But is the M1 better than an SVT?

Having owned both, I would say that it would come down to the user to determine which one is better. Therefore the US wins hands down.

Price of them sure went nuts in the last 15 years. Personally, I prefer the improved version, being the m14. I think the main reason they have gained such popularity is the movies, and interest in collecting wwII articles. A very cool rifle indeed, but not really practical anymore.

Garand simply "the best battle implement of the war" General George Patton

I'm being a PITA ( smiling on this end) as I remark with Sarcastic astonishment " Really, the American general Patton stated that the main battle rifle of the US forces was the best ever?" I don't believe it, that is so out of character...:stirthepot2:

I agree. Unless I happen upon an old lady looking to sell her deceased husbands guns fast, one will probably never grace my cabinet. Besides there is so many other cool old milsurps that I want to get first

m/96 swede....m/38 swede....K31....Finnish M39....Finnish M91....another couple M91/30s...........

Actually handled a tweek'd 305 of a co-workers today. It's OK but his nonrestricted operating rod AR variant actually felt more substantial.
Blasphemy!
I used to have a M1 carbine. It was cool, but one I'm not that fond of is Mini 14's. I found them to be inaccurate. Total testosterone rush with a 30rd mag hanging out the bottom ( chill it was the '80's) but not so accurate.
Garand's are big motherhumpers anyhow, that's for sure.
