Savage 340C .30-30 bolt action ...anyone have any opinions on this unit?

There's one in the EE I'm eyeing. Not a huge fan of levers, and there's no .30-30 in the safe yet. Anyone have one of these? How do they shoot? Any pros/cons of this particular thing? I'm just planning to use the irons, no scope

My dad had one. They shoot fine. For my liking, its not a great cartridge, but was merely a vehicle for what was a popular cartridge.
 
I have two. Both 30-30. The A model has the original iron sights and the C model has the sidemount scope.

Both are excellent guns. I use leverevolution rounds. It killed my buck last year at 50 yards with a through and through.

I would have no problem with the scope out to 200 yards. I sight for 100 and check 50, 75, 150, 200 yards for drops.

It is a light, easy carry, fast to acquire the sights, great little bush beater.

Be quick or I may have a third one in the safe.


I just noticed you are from Shelburne. I spent my teens in Shelburne. I have family in the area.
 
I don't know first hand but I've read that because it is a bolt action, you can handload pointed bullets in it and possibly get higher velocities out of them than out of lever guns. Plus you have the whole selection of 30 calibre bullets to choose from.


I have a friend up the coast who had one in 222 an slew dozens of blacktail deer with it.
 
Have one in 222, and was the gun the kids learned to shoot with.They are a small gun,and easy to handle.The 30-30 is certainly safer than a 94,because of the clip.
 
Bolt action allows higher pressures in the Chamber. Higher pressure allows higher velocities. Spitzer bullets allow for better long range performance. All combine to let my rifle come up to .303 standards and THAT'S a 300yd rifle!
 
You can't hotrod the 340's as they have a weak extraction system.I have a .222 and about 90% loads work best............Harold
 
Good little rifles...Accurate to boot...I loaded some 165gr Sciroccos for a friend, and he was grouping under an inch with it...Not bad for a $150 rifle..
 
Great little rifle indeed. My uncle has a 340 in 30-30 that he had a side mount put on and a 1.25-4x scope. My cousin regularly gets 1.25" 3 shot groups with it @ 100 yards set @ 4x. This is one of the main reasons I have respect for the ole thurdy-thurdy.

If it's running well, all is good, if it needs some TLC, they can be a little odd to bed as they don't have a rear action bolt.

you can't load any hotter than a lever, I know I have tried and you left with scrap metal
 
My thought is that if you want a 30-30, get it in the lever action. If I was on a tight budget and the 340 bolt action allowed me to get out hunting, then I'd go for it, but otherwise, as ammo is around a buck a shot or more, I'd rather spend my buck on a 30-06 cartridge or a 308.
 
They're the spitting image of a 30-06 I once had, which I forget what model it was. Action looked weak on it, too, but it shot fine.
I would consider that Savage 30-06 as a good utility rifle and moose hit with it layed down and died, not knowing they had been shot with a cheapie, wimpy looking rifle.

I run both of mine with maxed out loads of leverevolution. And both are very accurate with that load.

I can speak for experience that they can handle the max loads available for 30-30.
 
I picked one up last year at a local gun show for $250 complete with scope. Picked up an extra mag from here for @ $35.00. Extra mags can be hard to locate.
Took it all apart, cleaned it all up and refinsihed the stock.
Been fooling around at the range with various hand loads and so far pretty pleased with it.
Doesn't seem to have as much recoil as my Marlin lever.
Might end up being my "truck" gun or my "out walking the dogs in the bush and the wife insists on me taking a gun" as it's pretty light and easy to handle.
