14" mossberg 590- can it happen?

Drop Epp's a line. I seem to recall Doug saying something about mossberg barrels, and he is a licenced manufacturer.

I don't think you can just drop in a shorter barrel. I think that the mag tube needs to be shortened+rethreaded for it all to work. I think a slightly shorter barrel is possible on the 18.5" without modification but a 14" barrel requires a lot more work then just a barrel. I could be wrong but i thought i remembered reading it somewhere which might be why it hasn't been done by a manufacturing company in Canada.

might need a different mag tube.

You will need a shorter mag tube for 14". The tubes are threaded and it would be a fairly simple matter to modify the existing one. They also shorten the forend but I'm unclear as to wether this is a necessary mod or not.

The ergonomics give the 500 a leg up over the 870 in my opinion, especially since the wife is a lefty. I like the 870 too.

You would need a new barrel, mag tube and slide, or make a 15" or 16" after market barrel

Assuming that there is a sufficient market...Whats stopping a canadian firm like dlask or NEA from producing them?

nothing other then cost and time, also prototyping, if the canadian market must deal with the higher cost of a made in canada product, they will want a quality product right out the gate, this takes time and alot of T&E

Yes, they do exist...here's my 14" 590 with the 20" BlackWater edition

...and with an 18.5" model. I guess I'm a Mossberg fan

The 14" 590 is a great handling shotgun and very quick with just the plain bead sight.

How many 3" shells does the 14" hold ?

Yes, the 14" 590 has a heavy barrel just like the 590A1's

The two that I had, one was a heavy barrel, and metal trigger group. The other one that I got first, had the regular barrel, and plastic trigger group. Both factory 14" guns. Both since sold.

You don't need a new mag tube, the existing one can easily be cut down and reused. I don't know if you can modify the existing forend tube or not.

Going with a 16" barrel would definitely be the easiest route.

My fantasy= light barrel 14".

Oh if only....

You should look into a Fabarm 14" pump. I had one once. It was smooth and light but I hated the big loaf of bread fore-stock. It also marked up the receiver when you cycled the action.
If I still had mine I would swap it out for standard sized/looking one.

J.G.....I never used 3" shells in my 14" Mossberg but if I had to guess it would be 4+1

Sure but then you would need to thread it

Love my fabarm. They have a normal cobb forend Ive been meaning to pick one up.

I've heard of legal 12" barreled 870 in Ontario, as long as it ships like that from the factory. Like those mare's leg lever guns are non-restricted as well...

Why is everyone and their dog making short barrels for the reminington 870 and no interest in the mossberg 590 market?

A 15"-15.5" barrel would be great,it,ends right at the tip of the mag cap on the current 18.5"barreled ones we have now and there would be no need to mod the slide.

EXACTLY 16in is IMO the perfect barrel length for a "combat" shotgun too. An aftermarket ~16in 590 barrel would be the cats arse for sure!! No modding and the perfect length!!

Im thinking about getting a run of mossberg 15-16" barrels made. I spoke to a machinist today and he is willing to take the project on.

Would anyone be in for buying one of these?

Im a noob to the whole legality of it though.
Could a machine shop make these? or would they need to be licensed some how?

Also if i had the shop make them could i sell them? or would the shop have too?
