True barrel length of the 4" Colt Python?

Well the only question I'll ever regret is the one I don't ask.

That being said can someone get a caliber on their 4" Colt Python and tell me the true barrel length? I'm pretty sure the answer is prohib length, but I've also heard that some barrels were registered off of manufacturer specs and true measure as restricted.

I would definetly love a Stainless Python 4" without having to look at adding 7mm length to get it into restricted class. Again I'm pretty well already sure of the answer but would love to hear otherwise.

You do know that Pythons are no longer made and almost unobtainable right? Any 106mm 'Restricted' Python in Canada would probably be worth its weight in gold.
*Note: Prohib'd pistols cannot be imported into Canada.

However, you might be onto something... if you can find a Prohib'd Python already in Canada, and an 8" barrel (the only length still available to buy as a separate item) ...and of course the money, you could get it re-registered.

Good luck!

That's not the only way
what the op is asking is "what is the actual measurement of a four inch python barrel (not the nominal measurement)".

the "four inch" is a Nominal measurement, not the actual measurement. many barrels that are called four inch are actually longer and can be verified as such and if it is 106 mm then boom, you have yourself a "four" inch python that is restricted.

I'm well aware of all of the above, thank you. That's not what I was asking.

However if it's found that the barrel is a true 100mm then another way of bringing it out of prohib is to have a gunsmith add 7mm. Then you now have a restricted 4" model that doesn't look fugly after a cutdown a 8" barrel.

^^ Exactly. Anyone care to get a set of calipers on their Python barrel and hopefully pleasantly suprise the rest of us? Again I'm pretty sure that I know the outcome, but it's worth a try.

How are you going to have a gunsmith add 7mm? just adding legnth to the end of the barrel does not make it restricted, the rifling has to be down the length of the barrel to pass verification.

Can't say I understand how a gunsmith will do it or the full legality behind it, but I am aware of some prohibs being brought into restricted by adding onto the end of the barrel. I'll ask a fellow to chime in on the subject that is a member here that had it done with a S&W, brought out of prohib into restricted.

But back on topic I would love to find out the true measurment of a Python 4" barrel is 107mm and just save the hassle of gunsmithing a collectible :D. A man can dream right? :p

Ahhh I looked back into that members thread on his lengthened S&W and it seems his gunsmith added a welded sleeve to the barrel bringing it out of prohib.

Still holding onto the thread of hope that the true barrel measurement is different than the nominal measurement.

It's bizarre how they measure revolvers to begin with.

EVERY other firearm is measured to the breach-face.

But a revolver is only measured to the forcing cone? What is the logic behind that?

The couple of 4 in colts I have had are under the mumber you will need
Had a s-w 586 that was right at it, but not over , so did not work out.
If a end is added, the barrel has to be drill out and a full lenght liner installed.

Hi that was me, I had a smith lengthen a m66 for me and verify it. I pm'd you his name, he is also a member on here. There rare but a little more common then hens teeth but there has been 4" revolvers that measure 107mm and all that needs to be done is a verification to change it's prohib status. Here's the 66 I had done

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for as the first step. Now to look for a stainless 4" to have modified.

The logic behind the method of measure for revolvers was to make all 4" or less revolvers prohib because they are, of course, far more deadly than a 6" gun! :p
