I have a Russian SKS and in my quest to accurise it with a Choate mount, shimming the action in the stock, adding a recoil buffer, I still can’t get the groupings under 3.5 MOA with hunting ammo. I am ready to upgrade to a more accurate rifle in 7.62x39mm. I am debating between a CZ858 and CZ527 (bolt action). I will be shooting both surplus and hunting ammo. I would like to know from people who have used both rifles, how much more accurate is the CZ527 over the CZ858. Did you have an issue with lacquer coated surplus ammo in the CS527? Thank you

IIRC the 527 should be about 1.5" with good surplus, sub MOA with good commercial loads, and the 858 around 3" with good surplus, and 2" with good commercial loads.

Experts please correct me.

I don't see much of an accuracy contest shaping up there, to be honest.

The CZ 527 should be more accurate, by far.

I have both guns. mhowarth has called it close.
The 527 bolt action is more accurate. Never had a problem with any surplus ammo in the 527. Twice out of 200 rds. with Czech Surplus I had to recock a round because of tough surplus primers, but it fired the second time. You can always replace a Wolf spring if you really need it.
The non-restricted 858 is hard to beat though. I've had some groups in 2.5" @ 100yds. with surplus, but the bolt actions will always beat it anytime.

Why would a recoil buffer change the accuracy of an sks?

Good question! I never understood that one neither since the bullet is long gone by the time the bolt carrier hits the recoil buffer. I think it was supposed to reduced the muzzle rise and making the acquisition of the target faster for a follow up shot when hunting. In reality it just simply muffles the bolt carrier and saves my hearing a little.

Own both the 858 and 527 i had the same result as lejarretnoir. Some of the surplus rounds fail to fire but recocking and second fire they go.Both great firearms.Easier to mount a scope on the 527.

I got myself a CZ-527 bolt rifle and I may get a chance to test it this weekend in between the Mother's Day weekend family events.

Thanks everyone for the advises.

Mine is accurate and yes the MFS lacquered case are a bit ''tight'' in the chamber.

What's the result of it being "tight in the chamber"? Is this a problem with the 858 or the 527? Are you referring to the MFS surplus, or the newly manufactured stuff?

Thanks.
