Single shots?

Just curious,
How many hunt with a single shot? I'm talkin Ruger #1's, 1885's, B78's, ect.
I learned to hunt with my grandfather and although he carried a Mauser in 30-06, he always taught me never to take a shot unless I was sure I could get the job done with one.

I only ask because I have found a Ruger #1 in 300 H&H and even though I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it, it sparked my curiosity of how many here hunt with a single shot rifle.

Feel free to post pictures too!

Cheers

The single-shot is the firearm of a Rifleman. Not as clumsy or as random as a semi-auto, but an elegant firearm for a more civilized age.

;)

My 1st centre fire rifle was a Stevens 44 1/2 in .38-55 with a heavy half round, half octagon barrel. I loved that rifle!

I now have 2 Ruger No1's (.25-06 and .270) and a Thompson Center Encore in .30-06 (with an extra .223 barrel).

The Ruger No 1's are prettier than the Encore but the Encore is my "go to" deer rifle. It is light and compact. With a 24" barrel it is the same overall length as my Winchester M94 .30-30 with a 20" barrel. Plus - you can switch barrels with an Encore.

I've never felt handicapped by only having a single shot. Make the 1st shot count!

Thanks for all the awesome replies!
I am going to buy it, I've always wanted a 300H&H and they fact that it's a #1 is just icing on the cake :)
It's a 26 inch barrel, but as short as the action is, it's still pretty compact. I also found a Lipsey's 26 inch barreled #1 in 45-70 that I might have to have. Although I'll have to sell a couple safe queens to make that happen.

Keep 'em comin! I love hearing about people hunting with single shots.
As Mark-2 put it, it's a riflemans rifle!

My son and I both have Ruger #1s, mine is in .300 Weatherby and his in .375 HxH, used mainly for moose hunting. --- John

Thompson Center ENCORE...gotta be my favorite rifle, light, compact, feels great. Ive got .50ca. .223, 7mm08 .280rem, .260 rem( EA BROWN) barrels for mine.

Both my father and I hunt with #1's, we have never missed or lost an animal because we only had one shot in the rifle. They are excellent rifles, handle fantastic, reliable as they come, and very nice to look at.

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Yes, go buy it! I just picked one up in 9.3x74r and its gorgeous, handles well, nice and compact! It's going to be the new bear gun!

I wouldn't necessarily say I'm a fan of single shots and still have a few. I have had a few Ruger #1s, the last in 22-250 I gave to my son in the B.C. south central interior. I had the opportunity to;) replace it with an old classic, an old custom Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp. On it is an era specific scope to match, a 10 X, J.UNERTL scope

And it seems to;) show a preference for Hornady 50gr. V-MAX.

Down one size, I have a custom Martini in .22LR, no scope

That also shoots fairly respectively well.

And last but not least, a Savage 112BVSS in .25-06, packing a Leupold VX III, 6.5x20 Long Range scope with Varmint reticle.

No complaints on the accuracy here either.

Those are georgous rifles sir, thank you very much for sharing! I especially love 1885's and 1874's. I wish it was easier to find 1885 actions.
I have one single shot- a savage model 12 F/TR 308 and it's deadly accurate. But, it weighs 18lbs haha.
Even when I do carry a repeater I only ever load 2 rounds, one in the mag and one in the chamber. Never needed the second.
The only rifle I load to max capacity is my marlin 1895 45-70, but that's for bear protection.
I'm getting really excited about this ruger. Thanks again for all the encouraging posts!

I have owned two Browning B78's for over 30 years, one octagon 22/250, the other a heavy round barrel 30-06. The year I bought the first one was the year I started actually killing deer, not just blowing holes in the air. The 78 trigger sort of precludes it from being a real good target rifle, but I can hold my own hunting. I think they are one for the most elegant rifles ever.

Having to shoot left handed due to my eyes I like a #1 a lot as I can reload it faster then a bolt as I can't really use my left hand to work a bolt. Watching me fumble with a bolt action is painfull.

If only they still made B78's. I think they're incredible rifles too, they're just damn hard to find!

I hunt with single shot rifles, and with Drillings and BBF's ( German O/U shotgun rifles) I like the pure simplicity of the single shot and the versatility of a combination rifle/shotgun. Only one shot from each for each type of game still qualifies as a single shot IMHO!
