This directly affects me. I own 2.5 acres 200 yards from one of the parcels in 63A (Lanark County). I have not found any suitable hunting areas anywhere near my land other than the parcels that I see that are part of the claim. I don't understand why we can't all use the land that way that we do now?

Help me interpret what this means. It says in the draft that these lands will essentially be like private property, so I will no longer be able to access them for any reason? This is a major blow to me and others that have been hunting these lands for a very long time.

From my understanding of what the draft says it will be private property and we will not have access to the land. On the bright side you do have at least a year or so before this comes into effect according to the website.

Notice how there is NEVER any mention by those poor trampled on souls about how immensely they had/have *BENEFITED* from the Europeans coming here??

Here's a stark reality: When the "whiteys" showed up (with their huge ships...launched from commercial ports...where industry reigned... and castles were the norm) they found a bunch of orimitive Natives. Tent and stick house dwelling people that had not even managed to invent the wheel, let alone develop any form of metal usage (which for other cultures had been in use for thousands of years) or even basic skills like animal husbandry.

Sorry, but this "they took our land" crap is getting pathetic. You were, are, and will continue to be FAR more advantaged thanks to the "whiteys"

Holy cow.

One of the things that is interesting about these claims is that my family and I have been on these lands for 3 generations and I have a direct connection to it. If this proposal is successful I will no longer have access to it, but others who have no direct connection to it will have exlusive rights to it. I know others who hunt these lands and none are Algonquin people.

It is also interesting that the only areas that they are claiming near me have waterfront. Most of the lands in the claim that I have seen have waterfront.

Holy crap that's a big area!

Land that was freely accessed by 12 million Ontarians is now being handed over to a small group??

It strikes me absurd.

You cannot undo history. Creating more injustices in no way repairs past injustices.

All through history the victor took the spoils. long before whitey got here natives battled amungst each other. Show me in evidence where the victor supported the loser and gave every thing back and more. It didnt happen.

Yep.
The Algonquins claim all of Eastern Ontario. The purple border around Ontario on those land claim maps is what they claim.
But the Ontario government made it clear that deeded land wouldn't be handed over.
The red areas are what they Ontario government is thinking about giving to the Algonquins (drawn from Crown land).

Here is another reality for you, if a native group raided a competing native group, they would have killed the men, taken all their belongings and young women as slaves and claimed the lands of the conqured tribe as their own, effectively eliminating the conqured tribe. End of story. "Whitey" comes along and basicly conquer the native groups without killing all the men or taking their belongings or using their young women as slaves. "Whitey" goes on to give shelter, nourisment and so on for hundreds of years, yet "whitey" is the bad guy. I guess "whitey" should have been more native when he arrived in this country and then we would not be re-hashing 300 year old crap today.

That is likely to do with the part about generating economic opportunities, hunting land is only a small part of this deal. As far as I can tell, there is nothing to stop the Algonquins from selling the land after they acquire it? One good result may be an influx of land to the market which would decrease the price per acre for a short time?

It really bothers me how financially irresponsible this government is. Our provincial debt is $235 billion dollars, $20k per person, unemployment is 8% and the government we elected is giving away $300 million and 117,500 acres probably worth another $300m with all the waterfront to stimulate the economy of a tiny group of people.

Additionally, I don't think this will satisfy them. They are asking for 9 million acres and are receiving 1.3% of that. Nothing against the Algonquins, I am just really frustrated with this system.

Well said Curly. Well said.

This is never going to end or ever be enough no matter what they get till they have it all. But won't ever be enough and will go after other things.
Could you imagine they do get all this land, end up selling it off back to the white man and in a hundred years are at this point again trying to get it all back for free. Wouldn't surpise me. This is the world we live in.

bought time the white father gave us back some of our lands. Oh and before anyone else says aboriginals should get a job, I will tell you that my job is to stand and defend your rights as a Canadian and I have done it honourably for the last 19 years!

As for people loosing their hunting land..... Now you know how my ancestors felt when all you whitey's showed up here!! Be glad it is not your home! Oh ya whitey's did that too.
Boo Hoo.
