hi everyone,i got a james river arsonal rebuilt k 98 out to the range today.my go to load for 8mm mauser is a 200 grn sierra mchkng wlr primer 47 grains of varget. col was 3.06 ,this is my standard load and has worked well in past.anyways ran these through my new gun and bolt was very hard to open and i quit after 2 primers fell out.also the rounds were 1 and a half feet high at 100 yards.i pulled all the ammo apart and the powder charge is right on.i thinking tight chamber ?or could there have been oil in the chamber ?i never cleaned it before i shot it.i gues im gonaa load 10 rnds starting from min and work my way up in one grain incs.im just realy suprised my pet load didnt work in this rifle. i wonder if i should slug the bore too

47grs of Varget with a 200gr bullet would be a MAX load! No wonder you had issues. Starting load should be around 42gr & work up. Glad you didn't have a worst story to tell us. Be safe out there people.

Agree with ganderite on this one.Every rifle is different and a pet load in one rifle isn't always friendly in another.Semi-frozen bolt and popping primers are clear indications of pretty high pressures with your combo of gun and load.Go with your plan of working up from MINIMUM and you will no doubt see some different results.

i found the problem this rebuilt mauser has a max col of 2.990 all of my originals have much longer throats im making my ammo to 2.970 should be all right now ,ill let you know tommorrow.i slugged the new crterion barrel and its .323.

And does that mean your going to start with a starting load?
