I have been invited into a friends hunting group and will be going next season for moose & black bear. I have settled on getting myself a 30.06 but am undecided on which one. I have thought about a Browning BLR, CZ 550 Lux, CZ 550 FS, Remington 700, Browning X Bolt. I would like to keep it at or under one grand for the gun.

The hunt camp is up in the Cochrane ON area. I also really like the look of a wood stock but should I consider a synthetic instead? I was told they have done both tree stand hunting and stalking so I am looking for something easy to handle in the bush. Any suggestions on what I should look at?

I have a Browning A bolt. Synthetic camo stock and stainless barrel. Had it for years and have put it through anything a normal hunter would. Great gun.

I have a 30-06 x-bolt stainless. The quality is excellent. It is the most accurate hunting rifle i have.Loading berger vld 168grns.If you shop around you can find they for under a grand.Picked mine up from Al flaherty.

from your list, I'd say go for the X-bolt! I like BLR's, but not the long action ones. You might want to check out the Tikka T3.

+1 on the X-Bolt. I have one and it shoots $18/box Winchester Super X ammo into Twoney sized groups @ 100 yards. Get a decent 2-7x scope for the Cochrane area - I have a Vortex on my Savage 99 and love it.

Xbolt for sure. When I had my 300wsm it would put 5 shotters at moa any time I tried and the best group was around half that and since selling it I have been looking for one in 308 or 06

My only rifle is a Rem 700BDL, nice walnut stock. (I'm old school and don't like synthetic stocks.... but likely more practical)

Our awesome local gunsmith , Dennis Sorenson glass bedded and tweeked the muzzle. I added a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 scope. Shoots factory Hornady 165 gr ammo.... with moa results.

Admittedly I am not savvy with a lot of different makes and calibres, but this rifle is a real shooter, and I don't really need anything else for deer, moose, elk.....

Remington 700's are also pretty easy on the eyes :)

Lucky...

hey, I know Dennis, yep you're right, he is awesome!

Weatherby Vanguard Sporter P&D Edmonton $799.00. Well worth the money and a good performer. Good looking rifle. Also a little different from what the other guys will be using.

Secondhand Ruger No1, Winchester '95, or Winny/Browning high wall.

That's more my list than yours, probably ;)

30 06 is a good choice, I have never owned a Remington or a CZ, I have owned a Ruger, Winchester, Browning A bolt, Vanguard, and a BSA and my son owns a Tikka, all of which I would recommend. I own a BLR in a short action and like a few other people find the rifle is not as good a fit in a long action. I really like laminate stocks, handle and shoot as many as you can.

Find a nice Tikka T3

There is no such thing :p
