The long of the skinny here.............

Savage F class donor action, target trigger, and stock...........
Shillen select match stainless 14 twist 224 barrel, should finish at 28 and a halfish..........
Barrel will be zero taper 1.25 inch dia, 11 degree recessed target crown...........

Oh the chamber..............well the time proven 222 Remington, .250 neck, .250 throat...............
The Barrel nut.............hanging on the wall as a onlooker........its sitting this one out......

Thats right................Long live the Duece........

I have a silver Weaver T36 with target dot, Leupold QRW rings and PRW bases all ready to mount, barrel and action are off for mating tomorrow, next schedualed match..........January 20th 2013...........the big question is.....will she be ready????

As much as I want to be the driving force behind this one....I will be on the sideline coaching..........this is not my rifle.....well it is as far as ownership goes....but Tammy gets to be the nut behind the bolt...........

wish them both well boys..............

It'll shoot silly tight groups.

The debate over H4198 or Benchmark or IMR8208 will rage strong in this chambering. Personally, I dislike the long sticks of the 4198. Really enjoyed the 8208 in my PPC.

50, 52, 53, 55gr?

Lee makes a collet neck die too.

Jerry

I am thinking 53 grain pills propelled with N133..............the Tikka liked that diet

If you look in the picture hard Jerry you will see a set of vintage Bonanza Benchrest dies...........

the real debate............Winchester Western or Lapua for brass, for the younger crowd, Winchester dropped the Winchester Western name in the mid to late 60's.............retro brass............

Very cool project indeed. I had a sporter weight 222 back a few years ago that shot little bitty groups, was my go to coyote rifle for walking. Good luck with your project, I am looking forward to hear how it fairs at your matches.

There is no debate - western for sure.

Maybe even Frontier - orig Hrn brass.

If you can't find any of the above, Rem cause well.... it is part of the cartridge name :)

Try the 450 primer. I have found it works better then expected even with extruded powders. Wolf SR magnum is a "soft" magnum primer. if coming out this way, I am sure we can swap components.

The 222 faded away due mostly to bullets and powders of the day. I am sure you will find the TD shoot very nicely for you today.

Be careful with the viht powders and temp swings. They are not all that stable especially in such a small case. I would lean towards IMR8208 first.

If going Viht, definitely give the 450's a test.

Look forward to a range report. I think recoil management is going to be "HARD" :)

I like all you're components for the rifle and have one similar with a kreiger on it. HOWEVER historically, the trip deuce was replaced by the 6PPC, not just because of bullet selection but the case itself, nothing incuding the 6BR can compete with the 6PPC out to 300M. Hey we're Canadian and always support the underdog. Next to the 6, I agree with your selection.
Good luck. Bill

I'm very interested in seeing the finished product! I'd like to use a Savage action for another build but see the handicap with the barrel nut and outter diameter...

What is the maximum outter diameter for a barrel nut using build anyway? 1.125"?

there is no handicap with barrel diameter when your bore is less then a quarter inch.............and the nut has been sidelined......
The barrel will be headspaced with a shoulder........just like one of those remingthings............That leaves my outside barrel diameter at a full 1.25 inch...........in otherwards.........HEAVY.........
I still hold records with a T3 lite chambered in 222 rem, this is just the new rifle on steriods.........but please note it is more geared towards a lovely female accomplish very new to the sport............

I thought about the PPC, and still do.........but I wanted to go old school......I have a soft spot for the Duece......it might just be that neck.......

1.120...........The outside diameters of both large shank and standard shank nuts are the same, its not a huge difference on barrel diameters on either and personally I think its going to equate to mute on the range............

I usually build off of a stevens 200 action, but after earning the new nickname of team savage I had to stay in the same perameters.........

Sweet, thanks for the answer. I'm 'building' an M1A right now but can't install the barrel by myself. When I get the time and money to build my next bolt gun I want to get a prefit Shillen and a Savage action and install it myself. Only problem is I want the heaviest contour available and 28". Anyway, should be good times, can't wait to see the results.

Also, do you find the bolt lift is tight on your Savage actions? My Model 12 bolt lift/trigger reset is brutal. Would getting a new trigger solve that or is this something a gunsmith would have to do?

No barrel nut, 1.25" O.D Krieger MTU straight taper.. $220 to chamber and fit the barrel and action.

On a standard shank your maximum barrel diameter will be 1.055, the .200 gain for losing the nut is pretty much again mute and I doubt you would see any effect on accuracy. Weight is not a factor for me with this particular build, nor is barrel length.

You might need a bolt lift kit to soften up your bolt lift...............

Never realized I could just buy a kit to solve that problem. I'll look into that for sure, sounds like an easy fix from what I can see.

FLSTFO2 Thanks for the pics, looks hawt. What does it taper down to at the muzzel? $220 isn't much if it means getting the barrel you want. I won't be interested in keeping the rifle light either so the heavier the barrel the better imo. 20 lbs should do it!

The barrel is straight 1.25" for 5" then tapers to .920" cut at 29". I think the total weight on the rifles around 15lbs, I never did weigh it on a scale.
The bolt lift is a tad stiff aswell, What doe's the kit do ? lighter springs ?
