Looking at getting my first revolver i thought i had it figured and decided on the (if i could find) 686+ 5inch smooth cylinder with full under lug. but after seeing the 586 i now want both. what is the difference between these pros cons. any input would be great thanks

And I believe the 586 comes with wooden grips, where as the 686 comes with rubber grips.

I own a Smith nickel plated 586, if you shoot a fair amount of rounds through the gun, the stainless is much more forgiving to clean. The wifes ruger blackhawk takes half the time to clean because the stainless allows the carbon to all but fall off the finish of the gun. Maybe have the 586 for looks, and buy the 686 to beat up

That's debatable. Stainless revolvers seem to pick up material on the cylinder face and experience problems associated with the diminished clearance. I had one 686 that had that problem, another that doesn't seem to. Never had the problem with a blued steel S&W. An experienced pistol smith told me it is due to the stainless being more prone to leading up on the cylinder face, or some other material sticking.
Stainless guns to look dirty quicker. A black / blued revolver doesn't show the powder residue as much.
That said, I still prefer the stainless.

True but pachmayr hogue style after market grips aren't that difficult to get. I changed grips to pachmayr years ago.
Where are you located, as I know a dealer in Edmonton with one - $795 in box. I know, as I fondled it on Monday.
for the 686 S&W model, the ''Deluxe'' comes with the wood handle, I have the Deluxe 686P, P for plus, it is a 7 rounds...... love it.
for the cleaning I take the ''lead away'' clothes, work pretty well, but if you take this on a blue finish....it might wairs off the blue......,
