Hi All,

I'm very new to the gun world having just got my restricted gun license after going through my silvercore course. I'm wanting to get a couple guns for purposes of self defense in case of SHTF scenarios. I know *nothing* about AR-15s and assault rifles in general. For someone like me, my priorities are:

1.) Affordability
2.) Ammo cheap/easy to obtain
3.) Very reliable/rugged gun (relatively) easy to maintain.

Any further considerations I should know about or other advice would be incredibly helpful.

Just to reiterate, this is not a trolling attempt, I know very little, I plan on just shooting paper , but... Just in case the apocalypse happens, you know?

thanks. :D

The whole possession of restricted a for personal protection is a quagmire that is likely to get you some interesting comments here and is pretty much guaranteed to get your application for a transfer of a restricted denied by CFC if you even so much as mention it. Restricteds are for punching paper.

I am wary of these type of posts... They more often than not end up being trolls.

There shall be soft treading in the months to come.

Officially, yes, restricteds are for punching paper. I had no intention of saying otherwise to anyone official. I plan on just shooting paper too, but... Just in case the apocalypse happens, you know?

Why even mention that? I mean seriously...

Why not save a whole bunch of headache and leave out the whole SHTF/Apocalypse thing and just ask what is a decent AR.

I'm still a bit of a noob here too. But try the search button (I'm not trying to flame here), there are A LOT of threads about this stuff. And usually anything that we starter-ups will ask has probably been answered on other threads.

The main thing you'll find (since you mentioned AR's) is that someone will say Norinco has worked for a bunch of people. Then someone will say that you should upgrade for a few hundred more to a Core-15, or Windham Weaponry, because there have been good reviews out there. From that someone will say but for a few hundred more why not go with a Daniel Defense, great product for the price point and it's the best deal in Canada right now. Again someone will throw in for a little more go with LMT, Stag, Armalite, etc, etc.

At some point there will be at least one person that will mention NEA, some legitimately and some to rag on the name brand. But honestly just go with whatever you are comfortable spending money on, and think will work for you. I personally don't really like the look of the Norinco AR's I've held, but never fired one. I like the looks of the DD, and have only used it once, but seemed really good to me.

As for maintaining an AR, youtube will show you most everything you need to know. They are pretty sh*t simple guns, very easy basic maintenance. Also expect a few people to make comments about how an AR is a semi-auto, and an assault rifle has the ability to go full auto.
