My little guy got a bunch of ticks on him a month and a half ago bird hunting. Fast forward to yesterday, took him in for testing, blood tests came back today, positive for Lyme Disease.

Just a heads up, when you're out in the bush, check yourselves and your dogs for ticks when you get back to camp!

You're preaching to the choir here, I learned after my 2nd trip to Africa about the tick frisk every night, especially in the sensitive (read crotch) areas and armpits. Pried one off my leg just about a month ago, he must have been there a couple days as he left a great gaping bleeding hole.

My old boy has Lyme. Checking for ticks is a ritual for me - lots around here. Vet says that 15% carry. Nasty little bastards - I took a razor blade to my side last time I had one - reminiscent of the Merchant of Venice.

Our dogs are treated with Revolution throughout the season and ticks are a non-issue. A couple of times we have found dead ones near their beds, but never a live one on or near them. I also spray my work clothes with a product designed for external use on horses (same active ingredient as Revolution) and find that it works well when you have to work in bush or tall grass.

What's the name of the stuff you use? I spend a lot of time in the bush come springtime baiting and hunting bears. Some days my clothes are just infested with ticks.

I won't be home till next week, but when I get there I'll see if I can find the bottle. There were a couple of different ones for sale, and I just went by price and concentration. I'm pretty sure the active ingredient was Permethrin, but I need to check that. I will PM you in a couple of days with the info.

That'll be great. Nothing worse than sitting in your bear stand and all of a sudden feeling a tick crawling around under your clothes. Gives me the heebey jeebies for the rest of the night!

Saw a neat little trick for removing a tick.
Gently rub the tick in a small circle with the tip of your finger.
After 30 seconds or so, they pop right out, head and all.
No fuss, no mess. ( Makes them dizzy ? ) Couldn't believe
how simple it was.

If you take the live tick ( in a jar ) off to the vet,
they can identify the species of tick & send to a lab to test for Lyme ...
the earlier the better to start treatment if required
The test isn't cheap, but if positive) it's still better than trying to treat the disease
once it's advanced to noticeable symptoms.

We use Revolution on our mutt & he's also innoculated with the Lyme vaccine.

Was your dog innoculated for Lyme?

Cheers
Jay

It's definately worth putting the revolution on your dog every month....if you are in a heavily infested area talk to your vet about giving it to your dog twice a month to prevent ticks.
