Need something to read the targets out at 500 and give me an idea whats going on without going on a long walk. What mag will I need for that? Optics newb

Don't hold your breath on this one. A very good (COSTLY) spotting scope and for a target a black dot on WHITE paper MIGHT show the shots. My guess is you'll have to get off your butt and walk, at least part way.

The trick is a good telescope, if your lazy and willing to kit it :)

go wireless......cheaper then a good spotting scope and even clearer on warm summer days when there is lots of mirage.

I use my sony handi cam and a old flat screen computer monitor, only money it cost me was about 200.oo for the transmitter/reciever and VGA converter and 200.oo for 2 deep cycle batteries. I got all the info from wheelgun, another user on the forums. Search his posts and he has all of the links to the gear you need.

Another option if you have money is a wireless camera system. If you have an Iphone, there are kits designed for it. For those that don't want to spend money on a spotting scope atleast.
I bet more people will chime in with the comments (you don't need high power scope)
Atleast that's what they said to me when I asked the same question.
I guess it depends what you want to do with your gun? If you are only shooting long distance and targets - I'd spend the money and get a Sightron S3 10-50 60mm
It you want to cheap out - tasco sells a target scope 10-40 50mm (this I have and love it) But saying that I have it on my 22 and shoot over 200+ yards with it.
I'm going to save up and buy a wireless cam I think. I have a newborn and the cam could be used inside as a baby monitor so dual perpose :]

Get some steel plates and a can of spraypaint. You can see the bullet splatters on the paint a lot farther than you can see bullet holes, and depending on your rig you may be able to watch the hits. Also, it makes a really cool kkkkeeerrrrrrrrrWHACK sound.

A decent 10 power scope will show splatter and danceing plates at 500, 20 is better.

another vote for spray paint and a thick piece of steel. It makes it possible to see with a 12x scope (well with 50 cal bullets anyways).

There are lots of cheap baby cam systems out there now, in fact apple has stuff made to work with their iphone but i think they run $200-$350.

The spotting scope is nice too as you can use it for hunting, but dont bother unless you have some serious coin to throw at it. Pretty much anything under $3-400 would be better invested in something else IMO.

Wireless. There is almost no way to score in the black using any type of optics at that distance unless you plan on using a big cal.

You can use 2 targets - one black, another white mirror image. Aim at the black and drop the bullet into the white. With a larger cal, you can see that shot if there is mild mirage. I can do that with 308 bullets and my Sightrons.

If there is any mirage, I pull out the wireless stuff and live happily ever after.

Have you considered the target itself?
