Dumptruck, you will get a chance to meet and shoot beside some of the best shooters in Canada. See their gear, chat about this and that. Send some lead down range.
The only downside is a match like this is very busy. We are all on a time schedule to squad, get to our positions, set up, shoot/score, move, do it all over again. It can be pretty overwhelming if you are also trying to sort out your gear along the way. Not sure which way your scope moves or how much each click sends you. Should have brought a taller rest, shorter bag, better mat, bug spray.... yeah, we still fight this.
I am sure the guys in Mb will have practise days or club match in the spring. The pace is far more leisurely and a newbie doesn't get swamped
But if you want to jump in into the deep end, you'll catch on pretty quick.
Best to do as much prep as you can to ensure your rifle, ammo and scope is up to the task of MOA or better at 1000yds. Know how to set up and what stuff you need to be comfy shooting prone. Most of the set up can be done at any range. Then know your drops and hopefully, test them beforehand. You need to know where that first bullet is going to land so you can trust that shot and adjust for the center. How your rifle will behave over the 17rds you will fire.
Once you have bullets in that big black target, then it is just a matter of learning to read the flags and wind cues, SWAG on the wind dope and sending that shot well.
Very challenging, alot of fun, and a great bunch of guys and hopefully gals.

@Dumptruck - it would not be appropriate for the WCFCC to be your first-ever time shooting a match. There are various things to learn about shooting matches, for example the procedures involved in shooting with three people to a target (who shoots, then who scores, etc), how the scoring system works, etc. If you have *never* shot a match before, it would be a bit of an imposition on the other shooters there, who are shooting a championship match.
Now having said, all these things are very straightforward and easy to learn. And on any match other than a provincial or regional championship match, you'll find people nearly falling over themselves to show you how things work and to help you out. Shoot a couple of matches or practice days beforehand (A.P.R.A. has a range in Homestead, S.P.R.A. has a range in Nokomis, and M.P.R.A. has a range in Winnipeg), and you'll have it all figured out - plus you'll have elevation zeroes for 800y, 900y and 1000y, and you'll have had the opportunity to find and fix any of the numerous glitches that can strike (for example - if your scope runs out of vertical adjustment for shooting at 1000y, it's *much* better to find this out during a one-day weekend match, than a three-day major match that you've paid $325 to enter!!)

never been to any kind of match where there wasn't someone willing to bend over backwards and help a new shooter.
Dumptruck - Practice a little and come out and have some fun, just try to get a little time in at a 1000!!!!!!!!! I am a member of the organizing committee and I would be happy to be squaded with you. I will have no problem sharing everything I know but it may be a brief conversation. I jumped into the game a couple of years ago and the guys in Winnipeg are excellent at sharing info and encourage new shooters.
In Feb I was talked into going the Southwest Nationals in Phoenix with only two competitions in Manitoba completed. I shot alongside some of the best shooters in the world and all of them had the patience for a beginner and helped out wherever possible, and that was at a National match. I learned more in that week than some get a chance to learn in a long time. Also, I have met people I still stay in contact with. So, come to the match and you will learn and have fun.

Great advice. Thats what most shooters are like. Willing to pass on what they know and are more than approachable. I wouldn't pay attention to rnba-shooter. Thats the kind of attitude that turns away a lot of shooters...don't show up because you are imposing on other more experienced shooters because you don't know squat. In essence only getting in the way.
I am very sure Damiel didn't make his comments with any sort of "bad attitude" behind them...
I hope anyone wanting to try long range precision shooting will not hesitate to throw their names in the hat. We had first time shooters at the very first WCFCC in Winnipeg, in fact I loaded some ammo for a couple of fellows in Nunavut that wanted to come down for the match and give it a try. Any new shooters, I'll shoot with you!
