.557 Snider

Uhh... .577 Snider.

Pretty much a reloading only option.

Cut down some 28 Gauge (IIRC) brass cases to the correct length, carry on as if you were normal.
There were a couple outfits making brass that may or may not be and option any more. Jameson was one. But 28G brass cases (use a shotgun primer) and BP are probably your best bet.

Cheers

24ga brass or plastic not 28ga brass uses a large pistol primer and plastic uses a .209 do not mess with the 28ga stuff

your going to need a bullet of .590"-.600" your also going to need to know what groove the barrel has if its 3 groove its 1 in 78 if its 5 its 1 in 48 the 3 grooves like short coinicals and round balls the 5 groove fast twist one will like longer coincals but should do ok with any

only one compny makes ammo and for 10rd its like $120 maybe more up here and its loadd with 777 a unsafe powder in the snider you want real BP with sniders

shockeys and corn meal filler work . as said 24g not 28g cheers fun to shoot .

no filler other then cotton fillers like corn meal and cream of wheat act like a sloid plug making pressure spike and only real BP as most sniders have muzzleloading barrels from p1853's these are made of iron why temped fate real BP is alot cheaper then shockeys and it does not produce ammonia

What about these felt wads? Anyone have any experience with them?

when i had the CBE mold for the martini henry i used lubed felt wads under the bullet i guess you could in .577 snider case use wads over the powder to take up air space but make sure the one on top of the powder is not lubed

Captech International still manufactures brass for the 577 Snider although I have no idea where some can be sourced in Canada, but Buffalo Arms in the states sells it, along with ammunition manufactured by Bertram.

Maybe the 577 brass can be exported as it is antique stuff, would be worth looking into though.
