Hey there,

For a .223 semi auto NR, which of the two would you pick? I actually really like the looks and feel of the MR-1 but have never handled a SU-16. After getting the forend and grip they are close in price. What you figure?!

MR1. If you can afford it then do it. They are super reliable and incredibly well built rifles. Recoil like a .22lr and shoot very well. The SU is a cheap plastic gun and overpriced for our markets but thats out of our control. Theyre a cool little gun but definetely not comparable to pretty much any other black rifles. The MR1 could almost make it as a service rifle but is still lacking in important areas. For civilian use it is a top performer.

The SU-16 is $799, AR stock is $180, and another few bucks for the railed forend. The Benelli MR-1 is $1800. They're not close in price...

Never forget you get what you pay for ( and to much for a plastic rifle ), a good advice save up a few more months and get a MR-1, you will be happy you did... JP.

I was just pointing out that they are not close in price, nothing else.

I own an SU-16, and I'm happy with it. It doesn't get a lot of use, but it's in the truck when I'm out camping.

As a gun truck this little rifle is a ideal niche rifle but for real serious precise shooting there is better option... JP.

I did alot of research on the two rifles since I am Juggling the two as well. Price point there is no contest. I was skeptical about the SU 16 all polymer design, but if you read in other forums they seem to hold up pretty good. I like the fact it folds up and is very light. The MR1 has great reviews as well, It really has a love hate following in the looks dept. Apparently if you want to add optics to the MR1, you need to purchase a longer rail? So I was told, adding to the cost of the rifle. The SU16 has a Polymer rail which is a turnoff for me but it seems to function well. Again its not an expensive rifle so I can live with it. My buddy handled the SU 16 and said it felt cheap. But it has been around since 2004 and the majority of reports are positive. I held the MR1 very solid well built rifle. Decisions, decisions.

I was able to mount a Redfield 2x7 scope on the rail as it came from the factory. It would have been easier if the rail was longer for sure. TBS the rifle shoots well with the scope, the rings are see throughs so I can use the irons if I choose to. I have been trying to find a strap on cheek piece but the Butler Creeks I looked at did not fit the narrow stock very well.

The current SU-16 has an issue with the receiver cracking at the rear, not sure if they have fixed that or not.

There are 3 busted recievers currently under discussion on the Kel-tec owners site, 1 in canada. I haven`t had any problems with mine and i do like the results of my testing so far. The Kel-tec owners web site also seems to have an unreasonable fear of steel cased ammunition, i am using both and only steel cased stuff for coyote hunting. Haven`t shot a benelli so i can`t compare but do prefere the Kel-tec to my buddies Mini 14.

Yeah I've run steel and brass through my SU and never had an issue with either. I tend to use the 55gr AE stuff you buy in the 500rd bricks the most as it's the easiest to find around here. The SU was designed as a light weight small varmint gun but a lot of guys have had great success with it in hunting deer also. The factory stock is hollow to hold spare mags and does feel a little on the flimsy side but the AR adapter gives it a completely different and solid feel.

I like being able to either fold it in half or break it down into 2 pieces and put it in a back pack. My current set up has to be broken into 2 as it doesn't fold with the AR adapter on it. I've shot some nice 100m groups with it and it takes any optics I want. The polymer rail has been known to have some creep on certain types of rifle rings but there's a lot of info on that on the KTog website. Taking it apart for cleaning is super easy and the piston system runs great. I have a modified FN FAL quad rail on mine and the top rail comes off to remove the piston and bolt assembly.
