Tavor: with M21 reflex sight removed, does the rail on the side mount on the top?

Howdy.

I've borrowed a Tavor from a colleague who never got around to taking that horrible reflex sight off because he didn't have a barrel wrench.

I've refrained from putting any great effort into disassembly because I would need a riser in order to put a scope on it, and I'm not about to order away for a riser for a borrowed rifle.

Looking at the rail on the fore end after removing it, I notice that the screws don't anchor into anything but the rail itself, and the screws (and clips) are spaced the same as the mounts for the reflex sight. This leads me back to the question posed in the title: will this rail attach to the mounts for the reflex sight?

I figured it'd be prudent to see if anybody could provide a definite answer before I invest time in trying to fabricate a barrel wrench (I don't want to mangle my buddy's rifle with a screwdriver or something else that doesn't properly fit).

Thanks.

If I understand you correctly, you're asking if the polymer side rail will mount in the space where the M21 optic is. The answer is no (and polymer would probably not be the best choice even if it did).

You would need to source a separate replacement picatinny rail to mount something other than the M21. Dlask and CanadaAmmo both used to have one, so these would be a good place to start (Dlask does have a barrel wrench for $20).

One final note: be sure to pay attention to the armorer's manual with respect to disassembly. You'll damage the charging handle guide rod if you don't remove it first prior to using the barrel wrench.

Thanks.

Had to ask; didn't want to strip the thing unnecessarily, and couldn't find a photo of the sight mount without the sight to see if it was drilled and tapped, or just had the dovetails.

Does anybody know the purpose of those two screws in the front rail which don't anchor into anything but the rail, then?

Um, they hold the rail on. Derr

I'm going to side with the bacon sandwich on this one (heh I always wanted to say that)

The hex screws you can see on your rail do not hold that rail inside the handguard. Thats done with plastic tabs that are a b*** to get out.

Take the two screws out and then tell me how hard the tabs are to get out of the slot. You are right, IWI spent years developing a rifle and put two pointless screws on the rail just for fun. Its pure coincidence that they extend between the two tabs. They serve no purpose.

. . . yeah that would make sense wouldn't it.

Damn I wanted to be on the bacon sandwich side.

in other news I'm thinking about swapping my charging handle and rail for better light placement and Cz/ak style charging handle manipulation?
