Starting a build for a LR setup.Want to be able to get to a mile with accuracy and beyond.

My questions are:

1)How much MOA on your base are you using?

2)What are you zeroing your rifle at?

3)What is the maximum range you are shooting to with this setup?

4)What brand/where did you get your components?

5)Anything else that stands out that I should know?

Your feed back is greatly appreciated.

With my last 308, which was zeroed at 300 m, I only had to come up about another 25 minutes at 1000 yds. So you might be ok even with just a flat base. I had Sightron SIII 8-32x56.

Ummm 1000yds is no where close to a mile....

Op for a 308@2550fps useing 175gn smk you'll need approx 115 MOA of up.. Are you going to run first or 2nd focal plane? And do you have an idea of what scope your going with?

I'd get a 20 MOA base. It may not be necessary with the given cartridge and scope, but it can't hurt. Give Mystic Precision a call and see what he recommends.

I would get a 40 moa rail because the 338 is capable of more than a mile and some day you might get invited to shoot out to 2000 yards or beyond.
1 mile mentor.

I have a 30 MOA base on my .338 and had a Leupold Mark 4 mounted. I can't remember, but I think I had only about 35 MOA in "come ups" with 40 useless MOA.

What I would do is purchase some cheap rings and bases, sight it in to determine where you're at, then return the bases and get a one peice that would give you the most useful come ups... I'm not too sure how else to do it...

300SMK at 2600fps, will require approx 78MOA of up from 100yd zero to hit a mile... how much elev. does the sightron have? my "rule" for shoot true long range is, i like to have atleast 1/2 my scope adjustment in my rails.. so if say my SB 12-50 has 70MOA adjust, i run 40 in my rail/mounts, doing this generally lets my keep 100yd zero with having almost all of my adjustment up.. iv got my 338lm out to about 1450, and ran out of room before i ran out of scope adjustments, and that's not even accounting for the hold over on my recital

I'd go 30 MOA
^I learned this the hard way because of two important factors with the bullet weight and handload I chose to use myself.

With a 170 grain Lapua Lock Base in a 308 Win handload, using a scope with less elevation upwards adjustments and a 20 MOA base.
I ran out of elevation adjustment at 1050 yards. Using a 12-42x56mm NF NXS series. I have no doubt that if I had bought the 8-32 instead this would not have been an issue. But, with a compensated sight picture I continued shooting merrily away. :)

In the recent past with 155 grain bullets in this 308 this was not a problem in the past.
Because I now choose to stay with the 170s and this scope, a 30 MOA base is a near future purchase for myself.

^^^ that's the BIG. Down side to high magnification scopes . They tend to limit the amount of adjustment available internally . The nf 5-15 or what ever it is , has I believe 110moa of internal adjustment . It didn't take long to become a huge believer in quality over magnification(not implying nf isn't quality) . My SB 5-25s are more then enough magnification for any range but the quality in the glass makes it so I don't need more and the lower magnification allows for more adjustment . 27mils in the SB line up (97.2moa).

Now if your shooting something like f-class then I'm all for the most quality magnification you can afford
