advise on backup sights

Hey guys
well my Magpul backup sights arrived and really like them , however they sit high on my rifle and for the rear sight to beable to install I'd have to get a new rail system for the receiver area and maybe loose the red dot sight.
I'd like to have the backup sights installed on my ruger but not sure now, any ideas and who have done similar builds and what are you using as a backup sight system , pics and input would be great.

Do you want your irons to cowitness the optic? I foresee plenty of frustration in your future, trying to get things lined up. You're going to find that the stock iron front sight is far too low to cowitness with any optic, so you're going to need to elevate it somehow, and it's not going to be economical. Probably cheapest to fit your 10/22 into an Archangel stock kit, then you can use standard AR irons and optics.

When you mean elevate the front if you look at pic one I put the magpul front sight on and it is raised when active but not sure how to get rear sight to mount to stock, I think Im stuck with out backup sights I havnt removed the orig sights yet . Hope this makes sense
I think Im going to have to choose either magpul or red dot sight for this ATI stock
Im not sure if the magpul sights will work on this set up with the red dot sight in place unless I remove the red dot sight when bat dies then the two backup sight would be flipped up , still need to figure how to mount everthing
 
Sorry Tazz, I didn't realize that was the front sight mounted. Then yes, you could fairly easily mount MBUS with an optic. Just not that optic. I have a Vortex Sparc on my 10/22, and it takes up much less real estate than the one you have pictured: 2-2.5" available on the rail after the optic is on there. It also comes with the high optic mount you'll need to be able to co-witness the optic with your MBUS.

Mounting the front MBUS on that plastic forend is really not ideal (short sighting radius, flexy mount position, no return to zero after disassembly, and probably not the same height as your receiver rail), but if you're not particularly concerned with accuracy from the MBUS, it will indeed allow you to have backup sights.

what do you think would be the best way to have my cake and eat it too ..lol
I'd like to keep the red dot sight and maybe riase it up is there a mounting rail for the 10/22 that will allow me to rais it up and install both? I have looked on a few sites and havn't found one yet..
I'm probably heading to lebarons tomorrow after I drop my wife off at work since Im off and need to pick up some ammo anyways so I'll see what they have
what do you suggust I use to mount the front sight with?

The ATI stock is quite flimsy (I have the same one and stiffened it considerably) so mounting a sight to it won't work that well anyway. I suspect just holding that forward grip will change your POI every shot.

On the other hand, optics today are much better than they used to be and rarely fail. For what you'll pay fooling around with it I would do without or just get another optic as a backup.
Cheapest option assuming the rear rail is the same height as the front- take off your red dot, install the magpul rear, sight in. Put your red dot back on and carry the rear sight and tools to change.
 
Just get a new, longer picatinny rail for the receiver (there's a few out there ht tp://www.cheaperthandirt.com/prod/Ruger_10_22_Picatinny_Rail) and you should be able to mount both rear sights no problem. The only problem I can see is that the front and rear BU sights may not be on the same plane but you can get spacers to raise stuff on picatinny rails, if that is how the front is mounted, I can't tell from your pics.

Maybe you'll get lucky with something like this mounted on the Weaver rail in a forward position, with room for the MBUS behind it:

But cowitnessing irons and optics on something other than a real flat-top can be a nightmare. If you are not concerned about cowitnessing per se, then just follow Perforator's suggestion.

For the front sight, you have very limited options. You should try it with the front MBUS mounted where it is; Maybe it will be "good enough" (doubt it, though). The only thing I can think of is to use the gas block height front sight mount from an Archangel kit (they call it a "muzzle attachment"). Even then you're going to struggle to get this the same height as the receiver rail. Or a gas block sight mount from an AR, assuming you can get it to fit on your barrel (same caveat about aligning heights):
