Rifle for my Grandson

Looking for some help.
Looking for a rifle that meets these requirements.
detachable box magazine
short barrel
short stock
good recoil pad
would like open sights and drilled and tapped
a decent trigger
light weight
chambered large enough for deer, black bear, and possibly moose(calf) Shots 100 to 150 yds max

Youth gun chambered in 7mm-08 to 308 sounds reasonable
Savage Axis XP Youth or Savage 11 International hunter xp youth Unfortunately they do not have open sights.
any good suggestions would be appreciated. thanks
 
I second the Gunsite Scout. It is a fine rifle and by all accounts it'll do anything you can reasonably ask of it.

If you find your way to Edmonton, or your grandson does, I'd be happy to let you try out mine.
 
thanks for your advice but you guys have champagne TASTE and I only have draft beer money keep em coming all will be thought thru thanks

A savage 99c in 308. Nice and short with open sights and drilled and tapped for a scope mount has detach mag and find them allot cheaper then the ruger gunsight

Understood, but you also have to realize that your list of features is pretty hard to match on a beer budget...

If you can do without the detachable mag & iron sights, the Stevens 200 is a decent little gun. We've had 2 of them, and both would shoot UNDER 1 inch 3 shot groups no problem!

The other option is you want the iron sights is a lever? Or heck, even an SKS is fun fun fun!!! And definitely in draft beer drinking budget!

Weatherby makes a neat little youth rifle.

I bought mine with sights on it and you can buy the box magazine (single stack though) for it. I am waiting for a McMillan pistol grip stock for it. Will be a sweet shooter once that's done.

Many sporter Enfields have had their barrels shortened a couple of inches. And the No.5s ("jungle carbine") have only 18.5" barrels to start with, buttstock is definitely shorter than the normal No.4. If a No.5 has been drilled and tapped it should be good bit cheaper than the collectibles price.

Also consider an old Savage 340 or Stevens 325, bolt actions in .30-30? Load your own ammo with pointed bullets for a little more performance. Still not quite .308 performance, but for a novice and using open sights, .30-30 should be lethal enough for the ranges at which he should be shooting.

I would like to suggest the CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39. With the hunting soft point rounds, its almost just as good as a 30-30 with the 30-30 having the advantage of up to 170gr bullets. You would have to sacrifce the moose hunting part, but everything else it works for.
