.17 HMR worth the time?

i have that gun works well very accurate at 100 + yards only negative thing i had to file the bottom catch on the magazine in order to lock it into place without chambering a round
 
I've got a .17 HMR Savage with a redfield scope, and it's a tack driver. I really love shooting with it. Although I haven't had the opertunity to hunt with it yet.
 
I've had 2 HMRs, a Savage 93R17BTV, and a CZ452 Varmint...and while I'm a HUGE Savage fan...I wish I had the CZ back. I've never liked the high bolt throw of the CZ and you're right, it can limit the scope options a little. Some might scoff at that, but lots of guys give as much (and sometimes more) thought to their scopes than they do to their rifles...it's a shame to change scope plans when you don't want to. Anyhow, the CZ is a nicer gun..and the best group I ever got with an HMR was FROM the CZ shooing 20gr. Hornady. Both were VERY accurate guns though.

Today, I don't own an HMR but DO have a 17M2 I bought this fall...and boy do I like it. I haven't hunted it yet, but will in the spring...maybe try my luck with some crows this winter here..we'll see. Lots of zip, and very accurate at a fraction of the cost. I posted a thread about it, here it is; http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...ging-my-username-to-17M2GUY&highlight=17M2guy I only got out of the 17HMR game when I tried a .22WMR on groundhogs and it walloped them with so much more authority than the HMR that I didn't think I'd use it for that again. For the record, .22WMR would be a better coyote gun than an HMR, but neither are as good a choice as a centerfire.

I'm out of the game of trying to talk anyone into, or out of any given caliber...AND...I plan on adding an HMR to the collection again once the finances allow...but for my needs here in Southern Ontario, I think it's of marginal use from a hunting standpoint..but probably the most accurate rimfire you can buy for target shooting. I have shot groundhogs, crows, and cleared pigeons from barns with them and they're a fun gun on birds..but not too convincing on groundhogs. I wouldn't shoot a coyote with one unless it happened along...as stated. Planned coyote hunts call for .204 Ruger or .223 at a minimum.
 
I got a savage 93r17 fv and really like it for gophers. I like it so much that Im going to dump some more money it to it. Got a Boyds RVT pepper lam stock thats waiting some devcon steel puddy that I got off ebay for 50 bucks. Im going to top it off with a Vortex CFII 6-18x44 thats going to sit on a EGW one piece rail. So Im hoping to fold some more gophers in half again this summer with it.

The best deal I found for rounds was a brick of Federal V shock 17g for 109 from WSS.

I was looking at buying a viper 6.5-20x44 from cameraland in the states for 279, but they dont ship up to canada. :(
