Yeah I know... It's already been discussed, but I couldn't find the exact answer for my situation so here goes.

Just bought another AR-15 (Daniel Defense), and plan on using it for tactical rifle, with various movement (lateral, forward, backwards), and various positions (kneeling, prone, standing). And distances from 7-100 yards, with shooting mainly under the 40yard mark. Moving and stationary targets.

I was originally looking at getting an eotech because I was under the impression they were quicker to get the reticle on target and had a wider viewing angle than red dots. But after some research I'm starting to think those advantages no longer exist or are not as apparent to the new generation of red dots made by aimpoint. And I've heard there is a big difference in battery life for the two.

My budget is about $500, used is fine. Please recommend a brand and model. (I for the life of me cant make out the difference between the various eotechs besides size and button placement)

Realistically, any optic will work for you, however under 40 yards iron sights are my recommendation. I like the EO-tech, but if you are properly shooting with both eyes open, any red dot will work as well.

Look into the vortex strike fire, and sparc sight. They are very inexpensive and very high quality for what you need.

I own an eotech, strike fire, millet dms-1, and a number of reflex sights.

40 yards? No need to aim, just look overtop of the rifle and point it as per the old army "quick kill" method.

I currently have a strikefire, field of view is a bit narrow. Thats why i was leaning towards the eotech, maybe i should learn how to shoot both eyes open?

If you run your reddot properly there is no field of view issues. Stop closing one eye and stop focusing on the dot!

As for which is better. It doesn't much matter. Different methods of image projection but both operate on the same principle.

As for irons at that range. You're foolish if you think irons are as fast or faster than a reddot. Furthermore try using your irons at speed from an awkward position. It doesn't work. Go low/no light and you're literally shooting in the dark.

Aimpoint PRO (http://www.oneshottactical.com/Merc...oneshot&Product_Code=OP-AIMPRO&Category_Code=)

More reliable than EOtechs, with battery life longer by orders of magnitude. And under budget too. Unfortunately the tough part is finding one in stock to buy.

500 won't buy you a T1 or even an H1, but it will net you a PRO, which imho, is the best value pkg for getting into an aimpoint. Eotechs, I've had, and honestly they are good, until they break. Aimpoints, they don't break.

+1 for Aimpoint PRO over EOTech.
I have both (a PRO and an XPS2) and prefer the PRO from these two.
I prefer the PRO's red dot and it also ghosts better with both eyes open (right handed).
The PRO has a crappy mount though that doesn't sit perfectly straight.
I don't care for the EOTech XPS2 battery compartment either.
However I also prefer the Leupold Tactical Prismatic red dot over either the PRO or XPS2.

Bushnell TRS-25 red dot? They are less than $120 all-in landed.

I am seriously considering one for my AR (1" riser required) and my 590a1.

I'm cautious of buying low priced optics, I really hated the small field of view on the strikefire.

I sold a Lucid HD7 at quite a loss because of this reason. The projector also took up a lot space at the 7:00 position.

Nutnfancy seems to like the TRS-25. An optic like this cannot possibly be worth $500+ (at least at my current pay scale).

Are eotechs fragile as someone previously posted?

I still prefer the donut of death. I also prefer the fact that holosights are even more forgiving for eye alignment. Both eyes open indeed... Unless you need a battery that will last on you for a 3 years non stop super ninja rambo firefight my vote goes to eotech with AA batteries... lol I like Aimpoints as well but ###ual preferences I believe.

OP: At this price point you can easily get an eotech for 400-500$ in the EE in a near BNIB condition. Not so sure with Aimpoint + the base you will have to buy.

;)

Cheers.
