there is basically a refurbished garand on EE the fella is asking 1900.00 for ...are they really worth that much!!! would that make my unfired 1955 absolutely mint springfield worth 3000.00???? ive had this one for 30 years NEVER fired it ..it still has the cosmo in some places ...christ whats am M1D minty going for ..maybe i should sell all my stuff and retire...

people are crazy i bought one in the late 90's for 800 and i thought that was alot. a buddy of mine got a beretta for 800 from some old guy all matching and was offered 2000 no questions asked from others. he did the right thing and gave it to his father in law.

My Springfield I bought was a factory refurb still full of cosmoline. Paid 1300 which I thought was high but it was the last one at the gun show so I just had to have it.

The reason these are so expensive is that USGI parts sources and the places re-furbishing these guns are charging top dollar.

Is a parts gun re-finished with Boyds stock worth $1900 or more? Probably not. Well, not to me anyway. But that's what it costs to build one, and the fellows who are building them are trying to either re-coup the funds or in some cases make a little extra cash.

Places like James River Armory are selling similar builds for around this much money as well. They are probably not much better.

I have seen a lot of M1 Garands on the EE lately where folks are asking this sort of money, but I think the market here is starting to realize it's just not worth it.

So while the fellow is asking $1900, we have many refinished and re-built Garands to choose from these days and I think soon most will realize in many cases it's not possible to get the money back out of these builds.

Just my thoughts on these Garands,
-Steve

I guess it's worth whatever someone will pay for it. The prices asked for Garads keep going up because people keep paying crazy prices. It's not like the M1 is a rare rifle in Canada, either. There are thousands and thousands of them!

ok so what are matching No4 snipers in excellent condition going for ...or longbranch MP rifles and dcra rifles ...maybe its time for another harley.....

Yes the weekly Garand price :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: session thread...

Simple explanation: Interest in USGI firearms is at an all time high and still growing. Newer collectors want them and are paying top dollar for them. The Garand is the most dramatic example but it is the same for 1911s, 1911a1, 1903, M1 Carbine etc...

As far as rebuild values. Even the cheapest way of doing it starting with Italian parts will run you 1500+ if you include a new barrel and mint or NOS parts, and a new stock. A recent build of mine for a laminated stock National Match version cost me 1800 in parts and parkerizing alone, and I would never consider selling it for under 2100.00

So now we have the reason why these cost 1800 dollars. Pocket,.... just keep getting those great parts, doing these lovely builds, and even I'll get the money in the near future for something I'll enjoy the rest of my life and pass it down to my son. A 900 dollar shooter would be great right now, but where are they?????

I just picked up a Garand shooter for 750.00 it will need a total and complete restoration including 200-300 worth of pit repair to the receiver. The barrel looks like a gravel road in the chamber, and it is a mix of every Garand manufacture out there.

So factor in the repair work, new barrel, new stock set, correct oprod and swapping out worn or damaged parts....

I bought my shooter IHC Garand for a whopping $420.00 in the mid 90's can't say that I would consider buying one now at the prices they go for now. I may end up building another one eventually though, got a Breda receiver and a few other parts tucked away.

I think this is pretty much bang on. There's a new generation of enthusiasts out there who missed out on $300 M1's and barrels of SMLE's at the hardware store. But they watched Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan and want one..now.

Many of us "newb" milsurp enthusiasts may not have the experience/skills/time/tools to undertake a restoration. We are willing to pay the current prices for a skillfully/accurately restored rifle. I'd even venture that most buying these high dollar restorations realize they aren't even that collectable...at this time. But I'd wager in 20-30 yrs these rifles will be worth far more than the perhaps inflated price we paid today.

Will they ever be worth as much as very good condition, numbers matching originals ? Of course not, not even close. But I'm hedging my bets that in 20 yrs my genuine USGI parts M1 restoration will fetch far more than I ever paid for it. Until then, I'll put modest number of rounds through a like new rifle and enjoy it. I'm hoping my now 6yr old daughter will grow to enjoy shooting sports enough to appreciate the rifle and I can pass it on to her or perhaps a grandson. If not, I'm sure there will be someone begging to take it of my hands.

So yeah, I'm ok with what I paid.

A Fool and their Money soon Part.

To me they just look like a $650 Garand (from P&S a few years ago) with a $200 Park-Job with a new stock.

Even the James River Arsenal K98 @ $1400.00 for a reblued Mauser really made me laugh.

What's next coming down the pipe? Chrome Plated Jeeps and Nickel Plated Kubelwagens??? I can hardly wait.

Buy High, Sell Low! It's Only Money!

Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart!

I started to build my Garand from parts picked up on the EE.
I picked up a Boyds 3 piece Garand stock (split order, double shipping charges thanks to US paranoia).
Altogether roughly so far it's about $1500.00+ for mostly NOS parts. Once you start, you might as well finish it. In for a penny, in for a pound (foolish?). There'll be a few more dollars spent if I wish to have it parkerized. I can see where asking prices are around $2000.00
Steve 1987 is right - you'll never recoup or make extra money going this route but I think he's wrong in saying that the JRA is "not much better" – they are better than the one I’ve almost finished building! I'm judging this by the JRA Springfield 1903-4a that I have. It's lovely and looks like it just came out of the Springfield Armoury in 1903.

If I could go back in time, I would not bother doing my own build again. Instead I would spend the same amount of $$ and buy from James River Armory (not affiliated in any way).

What value on satisfaction in building one up by yourself? Nada, just scraped knuckles and pinched blood blistered fingers.
Just my .02 cents

Gatehouse: "There are thousands and thousands of them in Canada". Really?
36 hamon: "I've had this one for 30 years NEVER fired it!" Why not?
