Best truck gun

What everyone seems to be hedging around, is beyond riding in the truck, what's the gun for? If the shot is actually made out of the window, then something that short and quick has an advantage. But if your target is small and far, you have the same problem as if the gun was carried on your shoulder. Rifles that I might consider for down south, would include: a bolt action scout type rifle in something like .308, a similarly chambered Remington pump, a lever action carbine, or even a Mini-14 or SKS.

not if the target is a yote at 100+ yrds out.

All things considered (gun cost, ammo cost, useability/versatility, ammo availability, durability, etc)...

Nothing is a more versatile* "TRUCK GUN" than an ~18" 12ga pump shotty. YMMV

* without knowing what the OP is intending to use it on (coyote, deer, bear, sharks with frickin' laser-beams on their heads, etc).

What about the Ruger Gunsite scout? Fits the bill for several categories that people have pointed out in this thread.
Short and pointable, detachable stock, 200 yard accuracy, good calibre to stop almost anything.

Truck gun......hmmm? Well, since we have sensible hunting regs here, there is no need for detachable magazines, and since a brand new Marlin X or Stevens 200 costs even less than most 303 sporters, that's what I would be buying. :)

The 12 GA 870 will always be the best and most versatile bet. It's reliable, accurate and covers ALL bases (unlike the other guns mentioned). Furthermore, it is cheap and can be stripped in about 30 seconds. Ammo is also readily available. And don't forget, you can throw a pistol grip on it, or leave the full length stock on and run a 12.5" Dlask barrel (my preferred method).

Shotgun with an assortment of loads...buck/bird/slugs.

Wanna do it on the cheap? Get a >$300 SxS and a 25 round box of #7.5 bird and a 5 round pack or two of #4 buck and 00...slugs IMO are not a great choice in a SxS.

With .22 LR and .357 magnum adaptors. Just lock the briefcase with its built in combination lock and you are compliant with the transport and storage regs.

A truck gun needs quick follow up shots IMO..a single shot just doesn't cut it. Id throw a mini 14, open sights and be quite content. My last Mini printed around 2" nothing under that but was deadly when driving the gravel roads and a pair or pack of coyotes are within range.

Good pick...ammo is a little $$$ tho!!!

But you need to consider the cost saving factor that you don't need to clean the deer since its already been minced. Just be careful when using it for bear defence. The RPG-7 is famous for bouncing off the skulls of charging bears.

Well this is the exact reason why I say we push a bill though parliment that allows us to mount PKMs in the back of are pick ups. Just imagine the possiblities.

You need CHEAP and TOUGH and COMPACT more than you need follow-up shots... get a synthetic H&R Handi rifle Super Light in .223 (1:9 twist) load it with Hornady 68 grain BTHP's and you off to the races... it is very cheap to shoot... the gun AND ammo is small, light and compact and it will take down anything you need to take down... and most importantly... it will function no matter how much dust, dirt and banging around it gets.

Why would the need for follow up shots be greater just because the rifle is in your truck? Wtf?!?

He is using a truck to haul the rifle around, I really don't think it matters if the ammo is 50% lighter, it's a truck, he could carry three crates of 50 BMG. I didn't see where he wanted a survival weapon for mountain climbing that is best for bear defence AND squirrel hunting.

Wow, some of the ridiculous responses here....

This thread kinda wandered from "truck gun" to "survival rifle" to RPG.

Based on that I recomend you carry a slingshot and make plans for some sort of AAA.

... the OP didn't give much info on how he is going to use the "truck gun" and what for, and he hasn't been back to clarify... I commented on the follow-up shots because Scott-R suggested that it was imperative in a truck gun... I don't know about you, but I use my truck to transport tools and materials and family... I can't, won't carry around 3 cases of BMG or even two boxes of .30/06... I agree that a Ruger #1 would be a great choice... but I'll be frigged if I'm gonna bounce around a #1 in the back of my truck... which is why I suggested the poor man's version... and I suggested a caliber that is an excellent inexpensive choice (the new H&R .223's are 1:9, which lend themselves well to heavier, longer bullets)... and if he doesn't reload he can shoot Winchester White Box for about 65 cents a round... that is my choice and opinion... which is what he asked for and what he got. So far your contribution has been limited to suggesting an expensive single shot model... no caliber, no loads, no reasoning... but you love to critique the opinions of people who are offering their suggestions, for their own reasons... thanks for coming out.
