Friend of mine was complaining that her engagement ring was getting dull. She can get free cleaning from where it was bought but that is an hours drive away. I jokingly suggested putting it through my vibratory tumbler for a few hours. I was joking but now that I think about it, it seems like it would be a good idea. Has anyone tried this? I'm mostly worried about the vibration causing some of the small set stones in the band to fall out.

yes the ultra sonic cleaner would work to clean the metal, but there are some spots, mainly on the underside of the ring that are scratched from everyday use, the ultra sonic would clean but would not buff the metal like the tumbler would.

Well remember if the spots buff out probably the claws that hold the diamond in the ring will thin and the next thing is you will post she lost the diamond.

I bought my better half a small ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for her birthday this year and she loves it. Completely non destructive and you can see it working, puts a nice shine on all the gems I've had to buy for her (she said its ok if I buy guns as long as she gets a diamond at the same time...).

In a pinch or just for general cleaning.

USE

a toothbrush and liquid dishsoap (with a touch of household ammonia) **** the ammonia will cut the oils/grease, but never use on turquoise jewellery.

Scrub the ring thoroughly with the soap/ammonia solution and work especially on the undercut surfaces and gems.

rinse thoroughly with warm water.

This will brighten the gemstones (because the layer of gunk blocking the sparkle will be removed) and the metal will be clean.

Won't be the same a a jewellery makers buff wheel, but is a fast and effective, harmless & (inexpensive)

*** Note ...... never use toothpase, as it is very abrasive and will dull the gold... actually will scratch the finish of most metal.

"Don't" the only way is with a "new" tumbler and "new" media. The small bit of brass get embedded into the ring and she will get a green finger.
Took some polishing compound to stop the green finger.

i read on my ultrasonic cleaner saying not to put stones into it as it can loosen the gems holding. just a thought.

FULL STOP!!!

Look up the M14 dishwasher thread...

Think carefully...

That is all...

Cheers

I have looked for this thread since basically joining b/c if nothing else I think it could be a entertaining read. People keep mentioning it but I can not for the life of me find it. Any help would be great.

I used to make jewelry as hobby. Vibratory tumblers are not for stones. Ultra sonic are ok to use on SOME stones, not all. The ring should be OK in an ultrasonic if it only has diamonds in it.

Best way to clean it at home is using a toothbrush and toothpaste. The toothpaste has a mild abrasive in it that will polish up the ring and take off most of the grime. Scratches from wear/use require polishing out by hand using effectively a dremel and felt wheel with polishing compound. Just do not hit the stones or mounts as it can really do some damage.
