hey guys,

i have a RC supreme kit, and going to use the powder measure today i have one question.

Is this thing ever consistent? get it set up, cool... heres the charge i want, presto.... about 4 throws of the handle, and it jumps .5-1 grain!

if it makes any difference, i was trying to use Varget. is it because varget is so big, granule size, or is it just that this unit is a giant POS?

thanks!

Its a good measure, but extruded powder is dificult to do with precision.

What I did was drop a charge .5 grain under and use a trickler to finalize the charge.

Ball powder measures really accurate, I now use a chargemaster.......

Hey Thanks! i had given up on using it at all. Ill have to pick up some BLC(2)

i had thought of that using the trickler to do a final measure, but that seems like a major hassle. dumping, weighing, adding, i think it will be cheaper to buy 223, than to pissa round doing it by hand like this. It wouldnt be that bad if it was just a few to do up, but i have lots to do. :)
thanks for the help.

I use Varget and similar extruded/stick powders in my RCBS Uniflow measure and can keep them pretty consistant within .1gr +/- most of the time. If it is a new measure run a bunch of powder through it to coat the inside with graphite. Then get or make a baffle for inside the powder and practice throwing charges with the same rhythm and speed each time.

Yes m777 listed the part I meant. And you had the reasoning right. You can also make your own by bending a washer or tin. there are instructions out there.

a flat disc will just take weight off on a vitical plane, while the a shape allows even pressure all the way around (tho holes are on the edge no in the center) and just allows for more consistancy as the powder level drops

If you started using a brand new powder measure, did you clean according to the manufacturers instructions?
Mine was "well lubricated", and even after cleaning all the parts with alcohol, it is recommended to run a number of charges of powder through it first.
Some powder your were saving at the end of a can but will not be using in the future because you will be changing lots or whatever.
Both of my measures work very well but bridging can occur with a number of the extruded powders. Weighing every charge is cheap insurance.

Lots of cheap reloading tools(price not quality) make reloading easier. This is definatly near the top of the list. I can't remember what powders I was having issues with. But this $10 part sure made a difference.
