so i picked up a pre 81 blr in .308 a couple of years back while working in northern manitoba. the gun is rough looking, but appears to function properly. i havent shot it yet, but plan to one of these days.

any ideas on whether or not completely stripping it apart and re-bluing everything is a good idea? i have heard the browing levers are a nightmare of little parts inside... definitely not a savage 99...

its a cool little gun! unsure the model specifically but it has a pretty short barrel, reminded me of the trapper version 30-30.

thanks.

They are cool guns. I've had a couple over the years, including one of the older 81's, and I liked all of them. I can usually figure out how to reassemble any gun I strip down, but the '81 was such a PITA that I wound up taking it to my gunsmith as a box of parts for him to put back together. Very embarrassing.

As long as it's clean and functions well, why worry about polishing it up? It's a working gun, so just use it and enjoy it, character marks and all.

i know, i know the sensible side of me is saying the same thing. it works, clean it and throw it into rotation with the other "toys"...

but then there is that kid in me who took apart every toy he ever owned, screaming to be let out!

oh how i need a project...but im not sure if this is the right one!

oh Hell, go ahead and redo her! I would, I like pretty gals! Always remember, a Browning, a BLR, is the right project, can't go wrong! You'll like looking at her and hugging her and holding her when she is oh so purdy!
