What would you do? (XCR question)

So, after looking, reading for a while, I've decided I want to buy an XCR. Bascially I want something that will be fairly accurate out to 200 yds at the range, but I can still use to hunt deer in Ontario. I'm looking at either the XCR-L in 7.62X39, or the XCR-M in .308.

I've also convinced myself that I will buy a CZ 858 (obviously in 7.62X39).

Here's my dilema: Do I buy the XCR-L in 7.62 and have a nice convenient way to use the same ammunition in both rifles, or just say the hell with sharing and buy the XCR-M in .308?

Anyone have the XCR-L in 7.62X39 - how does it fair for accuracy over wither the .223 or .308 - any idea?

I wouldn't use 762 39 to hunt deer

I thought you couldnt use 223 when hunting deer? So wouldnt that push your opinion to 308 only?

This. I barely ever use my .223 kit in xcr-l, 7.62x39 is much more fun to run rounds and cheaper. Once you have a xcr-l in 7.62 your Cz won't see much shooting time. The xcr-m is whole different animal, I've had a couple and still have one. I use mine for bench style shooting only, very heavy and long for bushwacking(use the RFB for that) expensive to feed but so worth it. Everyone needs a L and a M

You can use 223 where I hunt in Ontario (wildlife managment unit 85b)
Not cant use 308 in the area you have to have north a bit

Where are you hunting? Most of southern Ontario has a .275 maximum for hunting (except muzzle loaders). This would prohibit you from using .308 or 7.62.

If you're hunting in one of the counties that has the .275 max, but still want an XCR, then the 6.8 SPC kit is a must and is a good deer cartridge from what I've heard.

Ontario requires that you use a centre-fire cartridge for deer. That's all.

I have the xcr in 7.62x39. Use it for service rifle and deer hunting. Took 2 deer last year with it. From service rifle, I'd say 400m+ sucks accuracy wise, but 0-300m are good to go.

In Alberta, we can't hunt with .223, so the 7.62 was a no brainer for me. Agree with factionrr about the XcR-M, though. Too heavy to be carting around.

Aren't all the seasons down here regarding deer limited to bow/muzzle loader/shotgun (not always all three) anyway? Assuming he can hunt rifle in his unit (which I'm sure he can judging by the quesion), he might as well get a more effective round than 223? I don't think the small game caliber restriction applies as far as Ottawa, so that doesn't apply, not sure why you would recommend 223 over x39 when he's asking about deer? Not saying it won't work because I don't want to start that whole argument up, but I'd take the x39.

I'd say XCR-L in 7.62x39 then use the CZ money to get a 6.5 Grendel barrel for it. Wicked cartridge IMHO.
6.8SPC ain't bad either and a lot easier to find the conversion for, just not as many good bullets available.

South of wingham area you can use .223/.243/.270 etc
Fyn I'm not saying 223 is a great caliber for deer
For deer I leave my xcr 223 at home and use a bolt 243 tikka in the area legally
I'm not talking effectiveness of 223 vs 762 39 for deer, just the options for available calibers of xcr and it's uses for deer

If you are planning to hunt, look at the 6.8 SPC for the XCR-L, it has more range than the 7.62x39 and more punch than .223.

No good bullets for 6.8? 95TSX, 100 Accubond, 110 Accubond, 110 V-max, 85 TTSX. thats just for starters, and yes they are made for 6.8 speeds. Personally use 100 accubonds for critters.
