Hi there,

I was sorting through some left over ammo from the range today, and i found this on one of the primers of a LIVE round.. I figure the bullet is a misfire, but i dont recall having a misfire at the range today. i suppose its possible i picked up someone elses round by accident.. anyways, take a look. what is up with these strange markings on the back of the primer?? Any ideas??

Thanks

thanks for the replies. is this fairly common with federal ammo? Also what should I do with it?? i dont have any reloading equipment by the way.

Be careful with that one, it is a nuclear primer!;)

Seriously, yes, it is installed upside down, and no, in my expierience, it is not very common in factory ammo. Never hurts look 'em over as you charge mags though.

Its not common but as far as problems with factory ammo it is a common issue.

toss it in the trash its a non issue. If you have an inertia hammer or two pairs of pliers you can disassemble it.

soak the primer with WD-40 first to neutralize the priming compound, then send a couple pictures of it to Federal............

he picked it up at the range, good chance it may be someone elses re-load in which case federal has nothing to do with it. it looks like its been struck by a firing pin.

Factory ammo isn't perfect and i've seen backwards primers as well as a whole bunch of other problems, usually people have brought the faulty ammo to me for inspection. It can be a real piss off when you buy a box of premium ammo for $65 and there is a backwards primer or 5 out of 20 rounds won't chamber. :)

A. Soaking a primer won't inactivate it.
B. why would he need to inactivate the primer? It is in backwards and even if ignited could never set off the powder.
C. It would be extremely difficult to set that primer off because it is in backwards.

This could be true, but there is an easy way to tell. Check to see if the crimp is still intact or if it's been removed ?
