How many will 12 elk feed? Depends how much money they get when they sell the meat in Winnipeg. Don't think for a minute it'll actually be given to "elders" or something silly like that.
This isn't an isolated incident, happens all the time. They actually camp with reefer trucks in the Ducks every year......but of course it's the wolves killing all our moose and elk. :rolleyes:
 
For the people that say that we need to honor the treaties exactly as they were written , I agree, however, I do encourage people to read the actual text of some of the treaties.

Most treaties contain a similar clause.

How happy would most natives be if the government only provided exactly what was included in the treaties, an example being.

It is further agreed between Her Majesty and the said Indians that the following articles shall be supplied to any band of the said Indians who are now cultivating the soil, or who shall hereafter commence to cultivate the land, that is to say: Two hoes for every family actually cultivating; also one spade per family as aforesaid; one plough for every ten families as aforesaid; five harrows for every twenty families as aforesaid; one scythe for every family as aforesaid, and also one axe; and also one cross-cut saw, one hand-saw, one pit-saw, the necessary files, one grindstone, and one auger for each band; and also for each Chief, for the use of his band, one chest of ordinary carpenter's tools; also for each band enough of wheat, barley, potatoes and oats to plant the land actually broken up for cultivation by such band; also for each band one yoke of oxen, one bull and four cows all the aforesaid articles to be given once for all for the encouragement of the practice of agriculture among the Indians.

It is further agreed between Her Majesty and the said Indians that each Chief duly recognized as such shall receive an annual salary of twenty-five dollars per annum, and each subordinate officer, not exceeding three for each band, shall receive fifteen dollars per annum; and each such Chief and subordinate officer as aforesaid shall also receive, once every three years, a suitable suit of clothing; and each Chief shall receive, in recognition of the closing of the treaty, a suitable flag and medal.

So yes, I agree that the government should honor the treaty, exactly as it was written, giving the natives only what was specifically agreed to in the treaties.

Something is going to come to a boiling point sometime in the future. It has to because we cant keep this up much longer
 
I've heard stories of the same things happening here in B.C.For those First Nations that hunt ethically and take only what you need you have my respect.For those that slaughter because you can,you have my contempt.A two tiered system where a minority has superior rights to the majority cannot work.At some point things will break,we'll reach that enough is enough point.After all the Government is us,majority rules or so I've heard.We just have to recognize that.We can't have seperate Nations within this Country.Trudeau likely set us on this dangerous path.We almost and may still lose Quebec.It of course should be the same rules for everyone.Everyone that lives in this Country works and contributes to the good of all it's citizens.We can't keep giving and they can't keep taking.It is recognized that this Country was taken from their ancestors and there were injustices.Throughout the recorded history of this planet there are Nations that have conquered and assimilated other Nations.I don't know how we are going to solve this mess.Disband The Department that administers First Nations?It only seems to be a waste of taxpayers dollars.Wonder what would take it's place?Probably same thing different name.The Government won't act in the best interest of the majority because of fear of an uprising and condemnation of the International community.The imbalance in Hunting rights are only a small part of the picture.It's often hard to do the right thing.Democracies don't last long when Government takes from those that work and gives to those that won't work.
 
This is a drop in the bucket. A few year back when the TB B.S. was going on at Riding Mountain, Park rangers slaughtered most of the elk in the park and left them for the wolves. They could have sold tags, had the hunters bring in the samples and keep the meat or issue another tag if it had TB. Would have been plenty of spin-off for local business. That year I was hunting near Erikson we were bothered by C.O's about "baiting" elk. and they had a helicopter flying the park keeping the elk from coming out.

Find that yourself..... Here the Algonquins need 6 members to apply for a moose tag( no not every group gets a tag)....This is a draw system...No tag, no moose...Been like that here for well over 10 years....Apparantly this area is the only area in Canada that implements this..More should...
Yes peolpe have been charged, and charges have held up in court...I know of two off had that were hunting where 88man hunts....A no hunt zone for natives...They lost thier guns, and were charged...

Riding Mountain is a National Park, ie: no hunting. Having a government sanctioned elk hunt for us normal folk would have opened up a can of worms in regard to legalities. That's why a couple years ago they paid natives several hundred $$ per deer to shoot 100 or so in the park for testing. Apparently it was cheaper than Park Wardens doing it via helicopter, like the elk fiasco.
I've also heard about them doing aerial elk counts via helicopter that just happen to coincide with licensed hunting seasons outside the park. :rolleyes:
 
if they want to keep throwing the their treaty rights around then i have no problem with them using the weapons and tools they were using when the treaty was signed.go make their own bows/arrows,spears/knives.old black powder firearms.home made nets/boats,and have at er.not running around using high powered rifles and brand new trucks/all terrain vehicals.if they had to use what they had when the treaty was signed we would not be having this discussion now,they would all have starved to death.just my opinion.

I have looked at that exact "agreement" before, that's why I was asking for a link. I believe we've had a similar discussion before, so no need to rehash that.

Regardless, that area of Canada is under a different treaty than most areas here in MB(we have Treaty 1 and 2 mainly), so it won't fly here. Plus, a major reason the NDP is in power here is on account of the native vote, so don't think for a minute they'll pass a law which will hinder or limit first nations hunting rights.

Actually come to think of it, Metis were just handed the same hunting rights as First Nations here, due largely to a court decision in your province, Ontario. :)
 
White metis hunters are eradicating fish and game populations in Northern Ontario too.
They indiscriminately shoot anything that moves, last spring they shot a moose calf in Sudbury in June!
That young moose calf was the size of a german shepherd dog, they left the tiny remains along a rail bed in Capreol.
Every spring they gil net walleye spawning grounds of the Wanapitei River, and then they sell it at chip stands...Other species such as pike, bass, whitefish are discarded in the bush.

What is really a shame is that we have lost that special event called " OPENING DAY", by the time the season opens the Metis have already decimated fish and wildlife.
