Hey Guys,

I wondered if anyone had some insight as to why my SKS likes to jam up after the 3rd round, almost every time. Could it be the magazine? Faulty spring? Here's a video of exactly what is happening:

Thanks for any suggestions!

Check for a bent feed lip on the LEFT side of the magazine. Your magazine holds 5 rounds and the third one jams. The SKS uses a double column magazine and the first cartridge loaded goes on the left side, second on right, third on LEFT, fourth on right and fifth on left. When you strip the first cartridge off by hand to load the chamber it comes off the left side (this is the last or 5th round loaded into the magazine.) You now have a cartridge in the chamber and the next cartridge will be loaded into the chamber from the right side of the magazine. When the rifle is fired, the second shot is loaded from the RIGHT side of the magazine, leaving the third cartridge to be fired on the LEFT side of the magazine. When the second shot is fired, the third shot, positioned on the LEFT side of the magazine, is under spring pressure and the bolt is coming forward attempting to load this cartridge. It sometimes "stovepipes" or jams. The 4th shot can be fired and the last shot, although on the LEFT side of the magazine, is not under so much spring pressure so it then loads.

The numbers below represent the cartridges as loaded into the magazine in the order they are fired. As you see, the first cartridge is on the left, but it is loaded under control of the shooter and not by the action of the rifle.

The first thing I would check is the LEFT side feed lip on your magazine.

Hmm,fail to feed on 3rd. Magazine springs are strong enough on SKS's but if they are caked in cosmo or old grease, that can cause problems. I would say:
-if not already done, clean the mag from all cosmo, grease, paying attention in the spring area.
-check the mag follower for free movement, again clean it well.
-check for any bent mag lip
After inspection and testing, if problem persist, come back to us, we will find out:)

Makes sense, but this was a plastic magazine, so I don't think there could be a bent lip...could be broken or something but it seems to look ok. I have two of them and only brought one out to the shooting location with me since I was using stripper clips to load them. I guess my best test would be to just try another magazine and see how that works.

I appreciate the feedback guys, I'll let you know what I find.

As for the backstop, it was bigger than it looked, the headcam uses a wide angled lense so objects appear much smaller than they are at a distance. I was also backing into a farmers field that went for about 2kms and you could see in all directions, but I appreciate the concern for safety! :D

When you begin adding aftermarket mag, you are likely to have problems, not all the time, but the SKS original mag are still better IMAO.

Its the 4rth round that jams, not the 3rd. You didn't mention in your first post it was an after market magazine? but in my opinion they are hit and miss, if it works properly at all. Did it jam before you did the mod/ mag change?

That's correct, it's jamming after firing the 3rd round, so on the 4th round.

This is the way the rifle came, I got it on a trade, it came with 2 x 5 round aftermarket magazines, the original 10 round magazine, which doesn't seem to feed properly at all anymore, the angle is off or something, and a 30 rounder, all pinned to 5 rounds.

on my sks im using the tapco mag i do some minor mod , i do a little feed ramp near the chamber and it work perfect with that , before it always jamming a the 3 round

do some little chamfer just to broke the corner and the bullet will stop jamming

Left in original condition my two function flawlessly and I have a third on the way and expect the same reliability. Might be lots of reasons not to like this rifle but lack of reliability (in original configuration and well cleaned of cosmoline ) isn't one. YMMV

Thanks I'll check that out.

Sks. A solid gun for 150 bucks. Oh wait. Nevermind.

Wow so insightful, thanks for your input. I guess some people like to post just to see their own words....what a useless comment.

Well if the lips of the magazine isn't damged and it functions fine with the orignal magazine then..
I got a couple of questions for ya...
1) Are the mag's in question pinned? If so I would safely say that the way that they are pinned would be the issue right there.
2) Check the "duck beek" part of the magazine that locks into the reciever for damage. Or for that part make sure that it is steated tightley and securely into the said rifle. As some times after use the polymer mags can deform or be damaged in certain ways that would not allow it to stay put under recoil.
Post back the resualts.

If the mag is tight when inserting this can cause the polyamer to squish in, and can cause jams as it deforms feed lips while the mag is in the rifle. If it is a tight fit sanding some of the stock so that its not tight in the magwel may help
