Creamysmooth, I'm looking for everything. I have no loading stuff at all.
Ok... That makes that easy.
Start: I bought the Classic Kit at Cabelas. I never really found it anywhere cheaper in the province. North Pro has it. In the north end Frontier has it. It's a good basic starter. Depending on the money you have to start with, if you can buy some better components, just get the press at North Pro. Only place I've found that sells it separately. Then buy your kit in pieces. Of course it's hard to know what to buy without some experience. I started with the classic kit knowing nothing, and now that I've loaded 2 or 3 thousand rounds, I've almost replaced/upgraded most of the major pieces.
Case Prep: I got the Case Prep Trio online at Cabelas. You'll thank yourself for this one. This is instead of the hand champfer/deburrer and carpel tunnel syndrome....
Hand Trickler: The Quick Trickle I got at North Pro in Saskatoon. This is instead of the cheap plastic one that has no weighted base that the kit comes with that makes you want to eat your gun.... If you can't afford the Hornady L&L Quick Trickler, get the RCBS one. The weighted base makes a huge difference.
Autotrickler: I originally bought the Lock and Load Autotrickler at TNT. But then 3 days after I got it the new reverse osmosis system under the sink above it blew and so my second one was bought from Henry at Budget. The water company paid for it. Don't let anyone tell you you don't need one. If you are loading any type of bulk.... get it. If you load 100 rounds a year, yer good, otherwise this thing will triple your loading speed, and is an overall godsend.
Die's: Die's are hard to find for Hornady brand, but other than RCBS Gold Box sets, the hornady ones I've found are better than any of the other brands in my short career. They just seem to be cut better, have better griping surfaces and the lock nuts are far better than any other brand. Frontier has some. North Pro has some. Again Henry seems to be the best source I've found. Prophet has some listed as well and are great to deal with. Henry just seems to be cheaper.
Shellholders: These are a %$&#@ to find. North Pro has some. Henry has some. Wholesale and Cabelas have none. Nobody seems to carry a good selection. And you want Hornady ones as the trimmer only uses proprietary. If you get another trimmer, yer OK. The hand primer also works better with Hornady holders, but comes with a plate that will use RCBS holders. They just don't work as well and I suspect Hornady did that on purpose. I found the best way was to figure out your calibres, get the Hornady shellholder numbers and call Wolverine. They just ordered what I wanted and I had em in a week.
Trimmer: I bought the Hornady one and it works well, but only uses Hornady shellholders. When I get a chance I will buy one with a motor. Prophet.
Lock and Lock Collettes: Frontier carries them in 10 packs. No one else does for some reason. This is the way to buy them. And these things do make a huge convenience difference.
Case Lube: The Hornady Spray lube is nice but is a wallet rapist. I just bought the RCBS Case Lube kit. Goes forever for 15 bucks. Anywhere.
Scale: The one the lock and load comes with is OK. I want to get the Hornady L&L scale when I get some extra cash. It's 109 and works really well from what I've seen. There are lots of other scales, just get digital. Don't let old guys tell you different.... Cabelas.
Caliper: I bought a Cabelas one. Anywhere will do. Just again make sure it's digital or you'll pull yer hair out. I measure lots as I go. I measure every shell for COL as I have just enough time after seating to do that before the autotrickler finishes throwing the next charge.
Bullet Puller: Get the RCBS press puller and collets. That stupid hammer thing is retarded. Wholesale or Cabelas.
Crimper: Lee Factory Crimpers. Nothing else is cool. Wholesale Sports has lots.
Funnel: Buy the MTM set that has 2 funnels and different hole size attachments. Saves frustration. Cabelas or WHolesale.
Cleaning: I bought the Hornady 2L liquid cleaner. I don't like screwing with media and the liquid cleans the primer holes way better. I don't think it gets them quite as shiny as media, but it's convenient and the insides are bloody clean. Depends if yer a primadonna I guess. Also, the bonus is that the 2L cleaner has heat and you can buy the gun cleaning solution. My stainless pistols come out gleaming with little effort. Love it.
Am I missing components or tools? One consideration with Hornady is the free bullets. 500 with the Lock and Load Classic Kit, 100 with each die set, 100 with trickler or scale. Currently the 2012 and 2013 promotion is on, so buy with the consideration of free bullets. I've gotten 900 free 10mm bullets. That's a lot of cash at 28 bucks plus tax for 100.
If you just want to start out quick with the basics, get the kit and then you need a caliper, die's and shellholders and you can start. The kit also comes with a powder dispenser, which I have never used, as I don't trust not weighing the charges. I'm paranoid. I may set it up for my wifes .40 and load low power plated fun rounds for her as she prefers them and I don't have to worry about exploding....
I ain't the most knowledgeable I suppose, but this has been a recent learning experience. An older fella I know helped me start, and since then has converted or wants to convert from all his RCBS stuff to what I use as he's seeing how much easier it is. He was just stubborn and didn't want to try new stuff thinking his was the best set up. Now he wants it all. His set is slowly turning red from green.
Any other questions let me know.
**Disclaimer: I don't profess to know it all, and I'm new at this. No lobbing rounds at the new guy.
